I love this press now...after I removed the super-fine 2nd screen. With the fine screen installed it was *impossible* to use store-bought ground coffee.The thing I love most is that the vacuum-insulation really works! The coffee stays hot for over an hour in cool, outdoor conditions.

The screw on top releases before the filtering layers on the bottom. I have used this type of press for many years and have never had this issue before. Filtering of grounds is fantastic!

Super well packed in box which can be used for camp storage. I find that it insulates quite well and has more than enough sealing and screening surface to eliminate all grounds from my cup. It is a slight hassle to fully clean the 5 part screen plunger, but that is/WAS the price to pay for expert ground separation. Comes with bonus screens 2 meshes and 2 additional silicone wipers. If you attempt to use store bought pre-ground drip coffee, any more than two (2) tablespoons will not only clog the filter causing blow by. But the potential exists that the top reinforcement steel ring will bend out of shape.UPDATE: perfect filtering no longer depends on having a coarse grind. As long as you reverse the top plate creating a super tight seal between both internal screens with the silicone wiper trapped in the center. To work effectively the seal has to be perfectly aligned prior to fully tightening. This method is great for any size batch when using up to five (5) large tablespoons of fine grind coffee. The added benefit is that next to nothing gets trapped inside the screens and you can rinse the unit clean without having to disassemble the 5 part screen / cage assembly. Although I still do about every 4 pots to properly clean in the dishwasher.I made the change, and am never going back to gritty coffee with hard to clean five (5) part screen assembly's.

I’ve owned and used a lot of French presses in my time and this was a pleasant surprise. The silicone edge makes a huge difference. The tight fit keeps the grounds out of the finished cup of coffee when poured, even if you use a regular, not course grind. Coffee stays hot in the pot for a couple of hours. The unit travels well and I’ll be getting another one for our RV. Really excited about this press.Update: after about 2 months using this press the screens and screen guards bent and grounds started to pack between the layers making it difficult to use. They finally bent so bad I couldn’t straighten them out and the press is about useless. I’m really disappointed this didn’t hold for the long run.

When making a liter of coffee, it can only hold about 750ml of water. This is using James Hofferman's ratio of 60g coffee to 1L water. And from that, I only got about 550ml of actual drinking coffee. Some brewed coffee liquid never passes through the plunger screens (and not just what is absorbed by the grinds). And even after triple checking to make sure I have the plunger assembled correctly, and using a coarser grind on my coffee than I use for pour-over, I am still getting lots and lots of "fines", so much so that I need to run it through a paper filter anyway, which then gets clogged to the point where there's at least another tablespoon or two of coffee liquid that never passes through.

The coffee strainer assembly was very effective, but a pain to disassemble, clean, and reassemble. So we returned it.

It definitely keeps coffee hot after brewing! Super easy to make and I love the fact it comes with the extra pieces!
