Even the most hands-on of classic bike enthusiasts will often shy away from working on their bike's electrical system, believing they have neither the skill nor the knowledge for such work. Dr James Smith explains in Classic Motorcycle Electrics Manual that this need not be the case. Starting with basic electrical theory, the book demonstrates a wealth of electrical tips and techniques, providing a progressive and detailed guide to tasks ranging from simple repairs and upgrades, through to completely rewiring a classic motorcycle. Illustrated profusely with full-colour photographs and easy-to-following wiring diagrams, this book will be an invaluable resource for all classic bike owners and restorers. Review: A new bible for classic bike electrics - I’ve been fixing bikes for more than 47 years, and am a mechanical engineer. I just received this book and am amazed at how helpful it is. It is beyond my expectations for clarity, quality, detail, and thoroughness. If it has any limitation, it is that it references U.K. motorcycles, but that does not impact on it at all. (My bikes are all European or Japanese). I highly recommend this book to expert and beginner alike. Review: Covers much of the O level physics I had forgotten ... - Covers much of the O level physics I had forgotten (as well as getting an A level but this was over 40 years ago). I had an extremely temperamental Lucas E3 HM LO dynamo and Lucas RB108 CVC which are now working well thanks to this book (well I replaced the CVC with a solid state one), so can now ride around on my 1931 Sunbeam Model 9 with a 20W quartz halogen pilot bulb light on so other road users can see me coming. Explains well all the mysteries of The Prince of Darkness - Joseph Lucas.

Gets there eventually
Pages of basic theory before moving on to actual motorcycle electrics. Could have been more concise.

It's All Here - Great Book
This book is absolutely first class. It's clear concise and full of illustrations. It covers the theory and practical sides of motorbike electrics and gives real world recommendations on products and suppliers etc. It's worth the price for the excellent explanation of electrical theory alone. If you want to know anything about the electrics on your classic bike then don't hesitate to buy, beg, borrow or steal this book.

Comprehensive and step by step
Properly comprehensive and informative book. As a complete novice to electrics this appears to cover all items in a clear and understandable manner that even I can make sense of. Need more books like this for those of us who weren't there the first time round.

Recommended electrical manual for British Classic Motorcycles
Forget the 'other' electrical manual promoted by the Haynes publishing group, this is far more in depth & accurate, covering everything from wiring through magneto's, dynamo's their switches & regulators as well as alternators & coil ignition with rectification by zener's etc. Comprehensive is an understatement, recommended.

Perfect Electric Guide for Restoring your Classics
Excellent! It has as much depth as you could want, yet you can also dip in and just get the basic bits you need. My favourite bits are getting the most out of a multimeter and working out what size cable to use in my re-wire!

Classic Motorcycle Electrics Concepts and Guidance.
Currently in the process of rebuilding a 1940 Francis-Barnett (British Vintage) Motorcycle. Provides guidance from those with experience and provides additional insight before taking the dive into your restoration process. Hopefully I will be able to complete much of the work without sending out parts for service. Excellent book to have in your Resto Library.

Absolut Top!!

A great book about old motorcycle electrical systems.
I bought this book on a whim, I am interested in old motorcycles. I have been messing around with electrics for a long time and thought I new everything, but I learned a lot more. Author does a good job of describing all of the different electrical system, their evolution, how they work, how to troubleshoot, and then repair them. In the process he also gives a nice easy to understand tutorial on basic electricity. Everything and more that you need to repair an older motorcycle. Descriptions are backed up by very good photos and drawings. I am glad I bought this book, it is a keeper. Highly recommended for anyone contemplating working on an older motorcycle, wants to learn basic electricity, or is just curious about how things used to be done. This book is not a quick read if you want to absorb everything, but it is easy to understand.
