New Small Garden: Contemporary principles, planting and practice

Right from the first moment it's just been brilliant - one of those books that is actually exciting to read, just because it is so damn good! Packed with beautiful pictures and informative text, where the author's love and enthusiasm shines out of it, generous, encouraging and full of ideas. I absolutely love plants and gardens, but I've never had the opportunity to have my own garden till now. So I have lots of ideas about what i like, but absolutely no idea how to create a garden from nothing, and this book is honestly one of the most lovely of reads, and has given me loads of ideas and practical instruction presented in a very accessible way, which unlike others i have read are genuinely 'do-able' in a small English garden. In my opinion it's a classic. I can't imagine how anyone would ever be disappointed, it's an investment!

Wasn't quite what I wanted. I wanted more contemporary gardens and landscaping. So I'm giving it to a client instead as a present to increase their plant knowledge! This is a plant book and IMHO not a book showing off contemporary gardens. Bit misleading on the cover.

Addicted to buying gardening books and this gem is the best one I've found on creating a new garden. It covers all aspects and recommends suitable plants. The gardens style is contemporary, however leaves scope for a multitude of styles. The writing style is friendly and encouraging; lovely photos of inspiring gardens. Genuinely for small gardens, unlike so many where they suppose a small garden is the size of a football pitch!

Excellent book for London gardens, most of the designs are less than 80ft ( which is big by London standards). The book focuses of teaching basics of design rather than offering you designs to copy which was exactly what I was looking for

A lovely present for friend worried about small new garden. Great ideas, good layouts and lots of useful planting tips and ideas to make a small garden look much bigger and have focal points. Very impressed with layout and clarity.
