It is a beautiful kettle and at the same time functional.

Modern items are very often offensive and strange designs made out of truly rubbish materials e.g. plastic, chipboard, MDF etc. However sometimes you find an attractive modern design sculpted in timeless quality materials, like stainless steel and solid wood! I really like Alessi, although my favourites seem to fall in the previous category, namely items made from wood and metal, or glass and metal. This k ettle is truly made from top class materials and I think it is very attractive. Sometimes Alessi seem to go for form over function, but this kettle works really well (filling, boiling, whistling and pouring)! The whistle is "melodic", meaning it sounds like a single harmonica note. This is a nice alternative to the screeching sound of traditional hob kettles, or the nearly inaudible hiss of the bird kettle. The quality of construction is superb, and the kettle has a nice weight to it without being overly heavy. The pamphlet states that it can be used on gas, electric and ceramic hobs, but unfortunately it doesn't say anything about compatibility with induction hobs. I use it on gas, and this is where my one concern lies: the bottom bit of the handle gets really hot despite me being very careful not to let the flame curl around the bottom rim of the base. I worry about the long-term effect this potential overheating is going to have on the wood, since I've only had my kettle for about a week now. Despite this I'm very pleased with the kettle so far.
