Lovely and detailed illustrations
Ok, this may not be to most practical guidebook to bring with you on a trip: it weights a lot, and compared to "classic" guidebooks such as Lonely Planet or Rough guides has way less down-to-earth practical information. However, I think this is a different kind of guidebook and it does its job very well: the illustrations and photos are just beautiful, and the background information given in words+illustrations/photos (for example: different types of clothes, architectural styles, etc) is very detailed and informative. The biggest cities have 3D illustrations that make you feel like you're there, and in general you really feel like exploring the country while reading the book, and it teaches you a lot. If you want to do some background reading before or (why not) after your trip, this book is just wonderful.

A guide you cannot go wrong with
My wife and I tend to travel quite a bit and a DK guide is always our first port of call. These guides are always really easy to use and help to ensure you have an informed journey and do not end up coming home saying that you wish you had known that as there.

is the best. It outlines what you need for a visit
I have visited India before, and have other travel books on the country. However, this, to me, is the best. It outlines what you need for a visit, and I enjoy looking back at where I have been. The pictures are fantastic. I would highly recommend the book.

Broad coverage, rather than detail
Hard to do justice to somewhere as vast and diverse as India. As a result, it’s a compromise. So as a broad high level guide it’s fine. It probably won’t give you enough for what you want if you’re looking for specific locations. I wanted something covering New Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai and this was the best all in one I saw.

Useful introduction to India
Very good general introduction to India, a very big place. I have been using it as a planning aid so far and have slightly struggled with some of the maps and regional geography but difficult when other reference documents refer to same places by different names! need to use other resources for detailed planning of accommodation and travel options but a useful introductory guide.

India for beginners. Start with this book
This series is always excellent and this book was no exception.Tremendous amount of information but dished out in manageable chunks.Am still referring to it as I go through my holiday snaps. There is just so much to learn about India!

Not for the pocket!
More like a coffee table tome than a traveller's guide. Clearly written and comprehensive guide to whet the appetite of the traveller. Best read during the planning stage!

Useless read for Indians residing in India, especially Hindus.
If you are an Indian, it probably will be useless, this aptly suits Christian western travellers to India, but the pictures are very good, although, the narrative misses out on the history of the country, and the history is basically Hindu. With influences from other cultures, they don’t read even a picture properly, bharat mata image in Varanasi is, being given a twist, however, if you are an Indian traveller, paying for this book, you would want to read about Bharat Mata as it is, and not change the narrative of India.
