According to the enclosed color chart, colors are: Crimson, Carmine, Cherry Pink, Vermilion, Coral Red; Orange, Yellow, Light Yellow, Flesh, Lemon Yellow; Viridian, Deep Green, Light Green, Sap Green, Grass Green, Terre Verte, Lime Green, Greenish Yellow; Blue Ultramarine Deep, Prussian Blue, Indigo, Aqua Blue, Peacock Blue; Violet, Light Violet, Wine Red; Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Sepia, Terra Rosa, Mars Yellow, Mars Orange; Neutral Grey #2, Neutral Grey #3, Warm Grey #2, Black and White.  Good selection of colors for any subject!  Great oil pastels and great price for this set!

Are these softer/more blendable than Mungyo Extra Softs?

I have not tried Mungyo soft oil pastels, only the semi-hard ones, so I can't make a direct comparison. Holbein oil pastels have rich color, and blend well because they are quite soft. I recently discovered that they start to get gooey if allowed to sit in warm sunlight as I work. If you're going to use oil pastels, I recommend Sennelier (my favorite), or Holbein, but keep oil pastels out of direct sunlight when you're outdoors. What I like about using oil pastels is that you can lay them on thickly, scrape or blend for a nearly impasto texture, and even thin with solvent to make a wash. Try them on sanded paper - yummy finish - really grabs the color!

I noticed Sennelier advertises that their product can be used on wood and glass.  Can these also be used on wood and glass?

Holbein, my personal favorite for oil pastels, can be used on just about anything. The main concern about oil and soft pastels is that they do not dry, like oil and acrylic paint and easily smear. So, I would be leery about using them on anything that is not protected.

Question 4

Are any of the colors in this set toxic? Which are toxic?

Accepted Answer
