Roots: The Original Series [DVD] [1977]

My kids were studying the slave trade at school and I asked if they had heard of Roots. Turns out they were shown an episode so I thought I'd buy them the DVD. Brilliant. Loved it as a child and still love it as an adult. An important story (albeit a bit glossier than the reality) that gets the message across ('But why did they have slavery?) and a great personal story too. What a history!PS This particular set comes in one box with divider cases inside it for each DVD, not separate boxes for each episode which is what I thought but that's irrelevant if presentation isn't your thing.

A classic series, with some very fine acting from all concerned. This is entertainment that has the ability to stir the emotions and ought to instigate a good dialogue. Chattel slavery and the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, (TAST) is a very interesting and complex subject to study.There are so many true stories that can be told, but do not get the light of day and that is the only downside to such a successful series as this. Some people believe they know the entire story of the TAST through Alex Haley's narrative.

One of the best African history book I will never forget too quick. The author was very good with the the use of African dialects that was been used in writing this book. It shows the royalty of African in the land of their births before been stolen away to slavery in a foreign strange land. The young Kunta Kente was a true hero of his time knowing the importance of his African name refused to accept the western name giving to him by his slave master. Thus passed it on to next generation and so on before Alex Hardley was able to trace his ancestral home back in the present Gambia. This book ROOTS is a blast. A must read to every African.

The DVD captures the real feeling of the hopelessness and cruelty in which slave trade and slavery flourished. It is despicable that a man made condition as simple as recovering debt in England and Europe, results is such a cruel manifestation of human character.Since companies such as Barclays Bank and its subsidiaries directly became multinational and rich interest / business entities, the question of reparation should be reopen and honestly discussed. Otherwise the killings going on in Africa and Asia in the name of tribal, religious and sectarian wars may not be understood. These wars as we now know have spread across the world.We can stop this trend.“Roots” is quite a valuable DVD to buy and own.Womogi Otim

I missed it the first time this aired on TV so I purchased the box set —- once I started watching I couldn’t tear myself away . Best series I have seen in a long time . A definite must watch . Worth more than 5 stars in my books . Amazing piece of film .

Got this as I loved the series was very disappointed to realise that disc 3 is missing spoilt my viewing had no response from the seller but will try them again

Very disappointing. Item did not include episode 6 the final episode. So this then became a waste of money.Didn’t realise st time of buying put fvd aside for a girls night in during the darker colder nights Then episode 6 finished. No see b with 6 just two discs about cast and production of series. Having spent nearly £30 on first dvd set being totally lost about final outcome I have succumbed to buying a cheaper second hand set hoping to see what the final outcome was. Disgusting that I should have to do this

The discs containing episodes 5 and 6 were not not to good. Ep5 required continuous scene stepping to combat 'freeze'. Ep 6 would not play at all! Kept saying 'Load Disc' LOLWhat we saw was great, such a shame to have the experience spoiled like this.......If you get these discs make sure your reading glasses are on form - the writing on the labels is miniscule.......

ayant pris mon temps pour regarder cette serie que j'avais déjà regardee il y a longtemps je me suis apercue que le dernier dvd n'avait que l'episode 5 et donc le dernier episode manquait. J'ai renvoye l'article et a la fin de la semaine je recevais un tout neuf et cette fois avec le dernier episode.....Merci Amazon pour un service client rapide et courtois.Quelle plaisir de revoir en VO cette magnifique saga.

This dvd is okay because it shows how times were back in day.

Der Film ist ja gar nicht auf deutsch zu hören. Das habe ich aber erwartet.
