The Rosary of Our Lady

Four stars
Books about the rosary make me a bit uneasy, from the near magical discussion of St. Louis De Montfort to the intellectualism of Garry Wills, so I hesitated to read yet another. But Romano Guardini's book was somewhat refreshing to me. It speaks clearly of the rosary without nonsensical claims, and without an overly intellectual justificationist tone. I'm not sure I learned anything new, but I do have the encouragement to carry on.

An uplifting writing on the Rosary of Our Lady
Although this is not a large book, it contains beautiful pages on a prayer that is both simple and profound at the same time. Guardini takes his readers to a re-discovery of the Rosary of Our Lady and offers pointed suggestions for praying it with faithfulness and simplicity.I recommend the book to those who faithfully recite the Rosary every day, to be renewed in their devotion and dedication to Mary. I suggest it to those who have never had a particular liking to this prayer, to discover through Guardini's words the Christocentric nature of the Rosary.

Must-Read for any Christian
This is a fantastic work that digs deep into the Holy Rosary. The first half deals with the Holy Rosary as a prayer: the elements, mindset, and goal. The second half consists of meditations on each of the mysteries of the Rosary. Keep in mind that the Luminous mysteries were not in use yet at the time this book was written, so there are no meditations on the fourth set of mysteries. As a recent convert to Catholicism from an Evangelical Christian background, this book really explained the Rosary clearly and deeply and played a key role in removing my cultural aversion to this amazing and timeless method of prayer. Definitely recommended for Catholics and interested Protestants alike!

Usefulness of the Rosary to prayer life
Having read other offerings by Fr. Guardini from the Sophia Press, I decided to tackle that mystery, the Rosary. The translation seems clear and straightforward. Fr. Guardini sets the stage to either accept or reject adding the Rosary to one's prayer life, its history, how to use it, its place within adoration of the Lord, in a way that is accessable to Protestant and I would think, waivering Roman Catholic alike. The method suggests whole meditations on the life of the Lord that I found thoughtful for a would-be novice at the discipline. I recommend the book for the curious as well as the convinced.

Fantastic meditations
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book- but the meditations on the 3 traditional mysteries of the Rosary are fantastic and well worth the read. Do yourself a favor and read it

Good book, possibly able to find better on the Internet
This is a good book that is helpful for some. I give it a four, because I think it was lacking in some parts. It could have given a sounder defense of the Rosary or drawn more meaning out of the practice. At points, it cut a middling ground between the two. Still offers some food for thought, though.

Thought provoking and lovely May readings.
Beautiful readings. Only problem is the lack of mysteries of Light. The gift of the extra offerings for the Glorious mysteries were certainly a bonus.

Wisdom: Distilled, and expanded!
Sublime, in a word. (At least for a Catholic reader): Very knowing, sophisticated, and beautifully rendered. Succeedsprobably better than anything else on the subject (as did not a few of Monsignor Guardini's other titles on religioustopics). One wise, timeless--even poetic--treatment of this devotion.
