OUTSTANDING FOLLOW UP!
Ryan Westfield has crafted a wonderfully entertaining, suspenseful, and practicality-based series with GETTING OUT and this follow up, STAYING ALIVE. The EMP SERIES. The characters just can’t help but be lovable, believable, and all too familiar. Almost three dimensional at times. The story taught with suspense, action packed, and filled with possibilities. The only critique I could make might be that some of protagonist Max’s decision making hasn’t been very forthright. Yet we’ve already established that. And he is severely wounded, after all. And the others are simply too inexperienced to confront any of this with any sort of confidence. Though Georgia’s camping & hunting expertise has been helpful. As well as her shooting skills. But all of them need a serious reality check. Time to get their head out of their posteriors and firmly realize the seriousness of their situation. Mistakes can & will be made, to be sure. But some of theirs have been monumental ones. Time for someone (Max?) to take the lead, start barking out orders, and fully expecting the rest to fall in line. And stop putting themselves in situations where they’re always two steps behind the curve. It’s time they all got up to speed. That said, I’m looking forward to further adventures of Max, Mandy, Chad, Georgia, & her 2 children very soon. Don’t make me wait too long.

Enjoyed the story...Infuriated by some of the characters
Ahhh, when our best laid plans fall through... That's the premise here. This book was a rational progression of the challenges faced by the main characters in the first book: Getting Out (EMP book 1).I gave the book 4 stars, because the story is interesting enough, and does a decent job of detailing the struggles "normal" people would face in a situation that is anything but "normal" . I am intrigued by seeing how civilized people struggle/deal with the sometimes necessary sacrifice of their "humanity" in a survival situation. And this book does that. I took away 1 star because sometimes the characters do/say/believe things that just haven't been justified by current in-book events or back-story. That's my only gripe with the story. Besides that, noticed some editorial "misses", which are always distracting, so I thought the deduction of 1 star is justified. There is some thought provoking material in the book, which all books in this genre should provide.I'll be reading the next book in the series.

Proofreader/editor should be replaced. Book itself is an excellent read.
The proofreader/editor did a horrible job. The errors in this book include typos where it should have main characters name Max it has Mad throughout the book, words that should read now are spelled know, every other page is loose and falls out and this is a brand new book. If the book itself wasn’t as good of a read I would not have purchased anymore of the series but kudos to the writer, the book itself is great.

How to screw up your apocalypse!
A fun post apocalyptic romp through the woods. Westfield may need a better editor but he certainly doesn't need a better story. I love that his hero's and his villains are human, with human frailties. The main group is constantly making mistakes, but that's what happens in real life. No one can shoot a gnat from a thousand yards or make food for six with a twig and some bubble wrap. But the baddies aren't all evil genius masterminds either, and are just as prone to stupidity themselves. The side plot characters could have used a bit more development but I hope that their side of the story will pick up in the next novel. The first two installments have been plagued with some basic flaws but nothing I'm not willing to overlook in a $2.99 dystopian series that's just getting started. Overall a great beginning to an entertaining series.
