Original Stories Are Always Good
Yesterday I read a Carlos Fuente's story from this book.Carlos Fuente is a famous Mexican writer, who passed away recently. He was also an outstanding social advocate. How difficult is to read his story! Where are my nine years of Spanish, my experience of teaching beginning Spanish? I was wondering when reading Carlos Fuentes. He is not as complex as, let's say, Emilia Pardo Bazan, but the literary-conversational vocabulary is quite extensive. I have many of this type of books, and it is never enough to read them.Dual-language books are always value for those who are studying foreign languages forever like I do.April 15 2014Zoia Yeliseyeva (Sproesser)UTube zoiacalifornia

Great for intermediate or higher Spanish speakers.
I bought this particular book a little too premature in my Spanish studies. It is a nice book for those whose levels would be considered intermediate to advanced. It's not intended reading for beginners. Also, for those who care, the stories are from different regions of Latin America and the differences in slang and diction are profound. For example: words that are common in the story from Argentina differ greatly from the story written by the Cuban writer or Peruvian writer. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but worth mentioning if you are thinking perhaps all the stories are similarly written with the same general Spanish verbiage, this is not the case with this book. It is a compilation of several Spanish speaking countries.

useful tool
There aren't a lot of dual language original texts out there, so a relative comparison is difficult, but I did find the book interesting and very helpful in identifying idiomatic expressions in Spanish that can translate idiomatic expressions in English. I'm more of a "word for word" translator, and this book (and those like it) help me to strive to be an "idea for idea" translator.

For the intermediate student
A well selected book of stories with translations on opposing pages. For one learning Spanish reading a book like this is very helpful. I have digested many vocabulary words and become aware of nuanced constructions while enjoying the stories.

definitely not for beginner
This is a good, but slow read. If you are looking for an easy Spanish reader, lookelsewhere. This will challenge your vocab and conjugation skills immensely.

Great resource!
This is really nice for delving into a language and learning in a memorable way. Love the story idea and I hope to be able to spend more time with it as I go.

Not for academic reference: Book transcriptions are paraphrased, not literal.
I really wish these books would translate word-for-word. For a student like me, I need a literal translation so I can study how specific words are being used. But I'm finding that the authors who translated these short stories are "paraphrasing" what they feel the Spanish version is saying, and writing in their own English version. So this is not an academic reference by FAR. However, if you are skilled with Spanish and can know how to sift through colloquialisms and non-literal transcriptions, then the text can be enjoyable to brush up on things.

Challenging but worthwhile
I found this to be very challenging, as it contains a lot of slang, in particular Latin American slang, and many of the stories are also written in a very "literary" way. In truth, I think the Spanish in it was a bit too advanced for me, but I look forward to reading some of the stories again in the future when I can appreciate them more!

Cuentos Hispanicos
A very good variety of stories. Just the right length for the student trying to translate something above intermediate SpanishI think that the translations into English are of a good standard..A refreshing change from the usual text books. However they are not an easy read, I found I needed to check and recheck my work.
