An OK intro but lacking useful detail
I bought this to replace my copy of French Bulldogs - Owners Guide from Puppy to Old Age. Buying, Caring For, Grooming, Health, Training and Understanding Your Frenchie which I'd returned for being woefully inconsistent. This is slightly better, though not by much. It is apparently really hard to find authoritative books on this breed that are consistent in quality. This book, like many of the others, is about 80% common sense padding and 20% useful facts. It changes suddenly in writing style towards the end where a different person (a vet) has written a section and nobody took the time to edit it so it suited the rest of the book.I have read the whole thing from cover to cover and I am still left with unanswered questions - for example, once a puppy has had its initial vaccinations and booster, are more boosters required later in life? Since the breed is sensitive to extremes of temperature, what are the signs that the dog is too hot or too cold? It refers to but doesn't explain the dog's 'dew claw'. It also misses out key stuff I've read elsewhere, like the fact that you should resist taking a new puppy into your bed at night specifically because you can roll onto it in your sleep and suffocate it (like with human babies), plus increase the likelihood of separation anxiety later. It doesn't provide a comprehensive list of UK plants that are toxic (it suggests 'looking on the internet' - why did I buy this reference book again?), nor a list of human foods that are poisonous to dogs - and this is such basic information that any responsible new dog owner would want to know.Basically the book is OK as an overall intro to dog ownership and the Frenchie in general, but if you want to be the best dog owner you can be, you'll want to supplement this with reading other sources.
