The Godfather: Part III [DVD]

I am glad a saw this movie anyway
I agree with the previous reviews in that this film is not a masterpiece like Godfather part one or two for that matter - both equally amazing in my opinion.Having said that this movie is not entirely terrible either. There are some positive sides to this film. It made sense to make the movie in Sicily and Michael going back to his roots and trying to redeem himself. Al Pacino's acting is brilliant and I quite like Robert Duvall's replacement (feels equally real to me)I think casting Sophia Coppola and Andy Garcia was a serious error of judgement though there were some moments were they seemed real.Too many murders all over are on the ridiculous side. And unnecessary! I am also not sure if it was wise to bring Kay's character back - not sure of what the purpose was. The intro of the new Godfather could have been done with more subtlety etc.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
It's 1979, and Michael Corelone is trying to make the family buisiness legitimate. Underrated and underappreciated and often slated 3rd film in The Godfather saga. Excellent performances from Al Pacino and Diane Keaton and Talia Shire all returning from the first two films, with an excellent performance from Andy Garcia as Michael's nephew Vincent, who might become the new Godfather after Michael's children don't want anything to do with the family buisiness. Shame about Sofia Copolla's miscasting as Michael's daughter Mary, the one weak link in the film though she would go on to become a fine director later she's a very wooden actress. Bridget Fonda also appears as a journalist. A worthy conclusion to one of the best sagas in cinema history.

Well I liked it ... Mostly
I know '3' is reviewed as not the best film but I think it's under rated. I'm not a critic so I won't try ... Some great acting although I thought Sofia Coppola wasn't right for her role ... No chemistry & flat acting ... I enjoyed the story as a whole ... I could pick things apart but I'm not going to ... Maybe it helped because I've only gotten around to seeing it now rather than waiting in expectation for it all those years ago like others .... No subtitles on this version though! which is highly annoying as 1 & 2 'restored' versions did. Why not 3?

A fine conclusion to a magnum opus..
However, I do often wonder what could have been, ie If the studio had not interfered in FFC's vision for the movie.. I actually prefer the title of 'The Death Of Michael Corleone' as Coppola initially wanted, but the studio refused, and insisted on calling it Part 3. I personally would have liked a part 3 set in the 60's, then this one to conclude..Perhaps Sofia Coppola was the wrong choice for Mary Corleone [no matter, she was sadly and cruely subjected to alot of pressure from producers, studio staff and the media], but I think it depends how you look at her character overall, within the movie (a nervous, introvert 18yr old girl, not accustomed to the world of her father etc) and analyse the story in toto, perhaps on reflection she played the character better than most of us inititally thought. Anyway, Part 3 is such a good story overall, any occasional shortcoming can be disregarded, and the penultimate scene always brings a tear no matter how many times I've seen it.. It's Shakespearean in it's Tragedy.

Don’t listen to critical reviews! This film is a masterpiece...
I watched all three Godfather films at the cinema when they first came out... and subsequent TV airings. I haven’t seen them for many years though, so decided to rewatch all of the remastered versions via prime HD over the past week. Godfather 3 attracts praise as well as some criticism when compared to the first two. From my viewpoint, the critics are wrong. Sofia Coppola and Andy Garcia are perfectly cast; portraying youth and innocence, passion and courage. The story is much more than an ‘epilogue’ even with Coppola’s restrained appraisal. The film does conclude an epic story, stands up wonderfully two the first two, as well as leaving reflective philosophical existential questions open as should be the case: life, death, love, desire, passion and so on. You do need to watch the films in sequence, but don’t stop after the second....

All time favourite -
With all the technology and resources available today, they cannot make great movies like this today. Attention to detail and the direction is remarkable. I recommend the current generation to take a break from the current popular movies and watch this.

Go on you know you want to
cannot really say anything about the Godfather III, its not the best of the franchise but it is still better than most movies. All the best story lines are in Parts 1 & 2 but it still grips you when your watch it. Its the poor cousin but still worth a watch, especially if you have invested 6 hours of our life watching the first two, you owe it to yourself to finish the job.

A very poor sequel
Watched all three again over 3 nights. The first two are masterpieces of cinema.Stopped the third after an hour. It's an insult to the first two; poor acting ( even from Pacino), dreadful script and garish 80s cinematography which killed any mood or atmosphere. And dare I say it, poor directing from Copolla ( how's that possible?).Luckily left with only memories of the first two! The third was instantly forgettable!
