we all loved it! Amusing
Watched it with French and English girlfriends today .....we all loved it! Amusing , light-hearted , with a taste of the film ( the hidden magic of food preparing and tasting) , tongue in cheek humour with a mixture of fake snobbery and down to earth comments,.It happens somewhere in the French countryside ..[.lots of idyllic sunny French landscapes ]... A sort of fairytale story about a typically French restaurateur ( Helen Mirren) an elegant lady in her village first class eating place where the French prime minister chooses to eat regularly a particularly good pigeon dish ....who is in conflict with her new neighbour and rival, an Indian restaurateur , who has decided to settle with his vast family ....just opposite her first class French restaurant in view of initiating the French to Indian spices . ..... An implausible story with an implausible ending but ...it works!very entertaining !

Marvellous film - shame about Helen Mirren
Oh dear, love the story line, love everyone in this movie, but honestly Helen Mirren did you phone in your performance? The dreadful accent, the “Allo, Allo” approach to the role is awful.

La film est incroyable!
Incredible ... A story of life, love, laughter, heartache, joy, passion and ambition....a story of beauty and heartfelt honesty ..... You feel every emotion, you taste the food and you want to be there enjoying the fun. Helen mirren plays her role of Madame Mallory as always in a superbly beautiful way that radiates class and real elegance. She allows the viewer to feel her pain, know what she wants and where she wants to be. Normally in a film like this you would want to see her fail but it's quite the opposite, You long for her to succeed and find true happiness. Manish Dayal is so delicate with his portrayal of Hassan Haji that you love him from the very beginning but can't help but fall in love with him by the end of the film. Such a magical film that I will most definitely want to watch again and again. La film est incroyable!

she was driven to the kitchen in search of culinary satisfaction due to this fine fare
Hilarious! Levity and lentils, lovers united versus suave Mirren-au-vin, a villainous Cordon Bleu restaurant owner, who halts at nothing to stop the new kids on the block. A rural ride from beautiful French countryside to chic Paris, chefs and foody-fun through and through, a rich desert for lovers of cuisine. A story without blood, with no gore, nor silly special effects, just laughs and an all-happy in the end ending. A certain person with whom I was enjoying this, a lady who comes from Lyon (THE cuisine capital of France) was driven to the kitchen in search of culinary satisfaction due to the effect the filmic fine fare had on her! She was impressed. That takes something for a Lyonnaise! Expect to see scrumptious goodies so eat well beforehand to avoid the need to interrupt the movie for a kitchen trip

Good family viewing
Nice warm film, just about plausible story: I enjoyed it but had a bit of trouble understanding the dialogue (English always spoken with strong Indian and French accents). Worth watching if you can manage without subtitles.

Surprisingly good
I'm not generally a big fan of 'romantic comedy' films, but this is a cut above many and was both amusing and entertaining. Helen Mirren is well cast as the Madame of a Michelin starred restaurant and Om Puri ( East is East) is an excellent foil to her initial ascerbic comments and reactions. The nuances of outsiders settling in rural France and setting up a restaurant were deftly handled. The cultural differences were clear and ultimately became strengths. It was a fascinating transition with strong central characters who were both passionate and convincing in their beliefs and attitudes. There's a lot of gentle humour and some truly mouthwatering shots of food. I enjoyed this film far more than I thought I would. Heartwarming, feel good but with substance.

Won't play on my DVD.
I live in Canada. This DVD is a Region 2 (for Europe) DVD. Meaning I require a multi-region player. I tried to play it on my computer that has a DVD player, but that didn't work either. Rarewaves kindly offered to give me a 20% refund and keep the DVD! I asked them for a refund but they want the DVD back. No problem, I don't want to keep a DVD that doesn't work - but that means I have to pay postage. That will be nearly $15.00!!! So, the DVD only cost $8.00, Rarewaves will not reimburse me for the postage so I'm stuck with a video that doesn't work - but Rarewaves will give me 20% of the purchase price. yahoo.

You will love this movie!
I love this movie, I have watched it many times, I am an immigrant myself, I was 17 years old when my parents came to the United States. However, I would give anything to live in that beautiful village and shop at that market. And the cooking, yam yam, I still want to make that omelet!!! The acting is exquisite.
