Excellent value for people staring quilting

I'm something of a novice when it comes to sewing and thought I would use this kit just for the rotary cutter and mat for quilting but it is useful for so many projects - the cutter however has become blunt quite quickly, so I may need to get a sharpener or new blade but worth it because it is so tidy and easier than using scissors - when the mat it out and I am cutting any patterns it is useful to contain any mess and sweep it straight into the bin and the most unexpected for me was the ruler, which is an absolute godsend being transparent and useful to measure so precisely - I am a very happy customer as soon as I get a sharpened blade which is the only disappointment really - I had only used that 6 times, I would have thought it would stay sharp longer but as I say, I am a novice

Bought after reading favourable reviews. I needed a starter kit for my first project - a baby quilt. This product answered my needs exactly. The knife is extremely sharp but the plastic guard has to be retracted from it to expose the blade so the chances of cutting yourself while using it are very small especially if you are paying attention (which you should be!) The 6.5 inch square ruler is very handy especially as it has the 45 degree angle line to help with cutting triangles.Once you've completed a project, if you decide to continue quilting you will have realised that you need a bigger cutting mat (the one in the kit is A3 size, a mat A2 size or bigger is better) and a 24 inch quilting ruler so that you can cut strips of cloth from the standard width of cloth (44-48 inches usually folded in half). Don't worry you will still be using the smaller mat and square ruler!

If you're new to quilting, appliqué etc. as I am, this is a good start-up package to have with the necessary basics - rotary cutter, mat and quilt ruler. I guess it could also be used for paper work too. The mat is invaluable to have for accurate measuring in both Imperial and metric. There is one 'however' though, and it' s a bugbear with so much packaging at the moment: sticky labels and sellotape! The quilt ruler was sellotaped to the packaging, the glue has stuck to the plastic ruler and it now has sticky patches, not so helpful. Delivery v good.

It is just as I expected, no surprises (Oh yes it comes in a pretty big box so make sure you're home for your delivery day). It does the job just fine. I use it for my small sewing projects, I can just put it on top of my desk and it's very quick and easy to use, no problems at all, if you are going to use all 3 items it's worth buying it as a kit as it would cost much more to buy seperately

A great starter pack and wonderful quality, however I ended up buying the the "deluxe" Olfa cutter and a giant A1 mat pretty soon after this as I wanted a crimp cutter and uh, giant cutting mat for the the sorts of things I'm doing. I can imagine this would be great for first time quilters, but if you're thinking of doing a wide range of projects, it might be best to bite the bullet and buy the separates instead.

As I've only undertaken patchwork recently, I didn't feel that I could justify the individual prices charged for cutters, mats and grids in local shops as well as purchasing the fabrics required. This kit seemed such good value on Amazon and I'm really pleased with my purchase. Can't recommend it enough. The cutter (45 cms) and self-healing mat (18ins x 24 ins) are excellent BUT please be aware that the ruler is only slightly over six inch square. I've purchased another longer one but having said that the six inch square is ideal for cutting patches.The price provided excellent value and the delivery was super-quick. All I need now is some beginners luck to create lovely hand-crafted items.
