Q: Does brita purified water work the same as distilled water (i.e., eliminates white dust)? fyi - purchased recommended filters which did not.

Brita filtered water is not the same as distilled water. Distilled removes all the minerals, but Brita just filters it for taste and smell, removing chlorine by using a charcoal filter. Probably Brita filtered water would still cause the white mineral dust since minerals are still in the water.

Q: Any ideas on how to use oils with it or is it just not able to be done?

I've used oils in all my cool must humidifiers. never had a problem. I don't recommend using them if the humidifier requires a filter. Any of the cool mist hudrosonic ones basically functionion like a large diffuser. BUT you will use a lot more oil. I add a drop inside spout and breath.

Q: Can you use softened tap water in it?

I am not sure it would cut back on the white dust issue. However this is a wonderful humidifier. Amazon has a great return policy it might be worth the purchase. I assumeYou have hard water and have something to soften the water?

Q: I set the humidity level to 40. The indicator reads 65, but it doesn't run. It only runs if set the level to 65 or higher. Why?

Thanks for your question. Try this - turn your humidifier off then on. Set your desired humidity level. Place your humidifier on a flat, hard surface such as a countertop. The humidity sensor is on the bottom of the unit. Thanks!
