Does this winder do 100grm balls in one go

Yes it does. It does 100gm balls, 50gm balls, I’ve even done 20gm balls when I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to wind by hand. But I use it mainly for my 100gm balls

Can this be used to wind 400g

No, this is only suitable for smaller balls, the best one for 400g are the Mega Ball Winders that KnitPro make, codes 35002 and 35005, which wind up to 450g of fingering weight yarn, but they are quite a bit bigger and more expensive.

can this be used to make a cake from lengths of yarn left over from other projects?

I’m assuming that you would be making one length by tying strands together so yes it would work, I use mine with a swift which makes it much easier to wind without tangled yarn

What is the diameter of the centre cylinder?

3.6 cm at top increasing to 3.8 at the bottom.
