Juniper is a small tree with needle-like leaves, berries which are at first blue in appearance and colour but turn to black after two years, which is when they are considered to be ripe. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the berries. The essential oil is very fluid and can vary in colour from colourless to yellowy or pale green. The scent is pleasant, especially when used in blends, to which it adds a characteristic smoky note and works well with citrus oils.
