Fascinating results
A delightful little crossbred bitch from Dog's Trust recently joined our canine family members ( Bichon Frise & Lhasa Apso). The only breed information we had from Dog's Trust was that she was possibly a Bichon Frise cross. We've had Bichons for the last 16 years and she certainly has some similarities (size, weight, non-shedding curly coat and adorable, intelligent temperament), but we were very curious about the rest of her breeding because of her colour, body & facial shape and other quirky aspects of her personality. When I mentioned this during a visit to our vet, I learned about DNA testing. I didn't even realise it existed! After finding this Wisdom Panel test kit on Amazon, and ordering on 18th August, the kit arrived within a few days. It contains 2 swabs, a very clear set of instructions and a return addressed envelope. Both swabs are for one dog. The test was quick and easy to do, even with her tiny mouth. Just place each swap between the dog's cheek and gums for around 10 to 15 seconds, then leave to air dry for 5 minutes, replace inside the supplied package. Follow the instructions to register your DNA test on-line where you are given a unique ID reference number. Then, after entering those details on the DNA sample, you just return the envelope in the post. No photos,or description, or other information is required. Great communication from Mars Petcare throughout the whole process including acknowledgement emails, and updates, and you can also track progress on their website. Less than 3 weeks after ordering the kit, the test result arrived by email as a PDF - 13 full colour pages including an illustrated family tree, going back to her great grandparents. With great excitement, we have discovered that our gorgeous little girl Mollie has some fascinating breeding. A detailed description of each breed detected is included in the results. I had already decided that she must have some miniature Shnauzer ancestry, but I was completely wrong! Her real ancestry is totally unexpected! Her breeding is Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Bedlington Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel, Miniature Poodle Cross! We would never have known all this without the DNA test and what we have discovered is helping us enormously with understanding her even better, now and in the future. There is also an option to add a photo to her family tree certificate which we are going to do next. I can't recommend this highly enough to all dog owners who have a cross breed dog in their family. Worth every penny, and I have already recommended the test to several friends. Have attached a photo of our precious Mollie - we can't imagine life without her now, and thank you to Wisdom Panel for providing such a fantastic service and product.

Absolutely amazing!
We brought an adorable puppy at 12 weeks old being told he was a Springer cross Cocker Spaniel- which legitimately he could have been with his long ears and mental behaviour. As he has grown over the past months (he is 11 months now) his legs got so long, his chest deep and waist slim, with a long feathered tail & backs of his legs and he grew in to his ears we realised this very fast and independent dog wasnt all he was made out to be! After many speculations and guesses, I needed to know what was in this lovely animals genes- so that I could understand his behaviour and better tailor the training I was doing to play to his natural instincts. The test arrived the following day, and was easy to complete- a quick swab in the cheeks- the dog thought it was a game at first but other than that it was simple. Popped it in the post and eagerly watched the online tracker to see what was happening. As the return address was in the UK I was surprised when it was over a week and still showed as 'not received'. I contacted the organisation who promptly explained that the sample was sent on to a lab in USA. A few days later it arrived- although after that the status didnt change again until the day I was emailed the results. I was so impressed with the level of detail in the report- it tracked our dogs genes back to his great grandparents. Each breed found has a fact sheet which explains the history of the breed, and statistics. It comes with a family tree and certificate! So, what is he? 50% English Springer Spaniel (all of his great and grand parents on one side) but the other 50% wasn't Cocker! He is 25% grey hound and 20% mixed breed. The test wasn't able to work out what the 'mixed breed' part was because it was too diluted but gave indications of what he is likely to be. I'd disagree with most of the suggested breeds- (Giant Schnauzer or Great Pyrenees for example!) maybe present in his DNA but not displayed in his appearance or behaviour- but Saluki is on there which is what I'd say was very likely. Anyway, in summary- definitely do it if you want to know about the unknown dog in your life's history. It'll satisfy curiosity if nothing else!!

Would recommend
I purchased wisdom panel DNA after the vets thought Dora looked like a different cross breed to what I'd been told. I didn't send a picture when I opened my account for obvious reasons. The test itself was easy to do, but did take two if us as she's a boisterous 6 month old. The test took 2 weeks for the results and wisdom panel kept us posted on progress during that time. The results came back as the breeder had told us, but I'm glad I purchased the test for peace of mind. I would recommend this test if you are questioning your pets DNA

Who knew
Very happy with this, the results came in quicker than stated and were a bit of a surprise, but as a result my pet insurance premiums have gone down.

Does what it says on the envelope!
We had a 6 month old (puppy) rescue dog described as a Whippet X, but as he grew much larger than what we'd expected we were intrigued to know whether our suspicions that he was something else were correct (his 'fluffy' tail was of interest too)! The packet you get sent consists of an easy to follow page of instructions, two swabs that look like long handled teeth flossing brushes, & a prepaid envelope to return the swab samples (like another reviewer I agree that what you get sent doesn't look particularly exciting for the price!). You have to register your kit online (very easily done) & taking the samples is easy, all you have to do is rub/rotate each swab on your dog's gums between the gum & lip for several seconds (that is in theory as my experience proved harder because my dog decided it was the best game in weeks & excitedly attempted to bite the swab/my fingers as I brought it near his mouth, thus trying to make his results come out as some Werewolf Cross!!?). You then place the swabs back in their original packet & post them in the prepaid envelope! I believe the swabs although sent to Scotland (for UK purchasers) do have to make their way to The USA for processing (hence the estimated 2-3 week wait). You can follow through the website as each stage is passed & you receive emails telling you as the stages are reached. To the IMPORTANT stuff then, the results did indeed take 3 weeks to come back (basically you get an email with a link which reveals a very clear picture 'family tree' style chart, & description with some details on the breed[s] detected) as far as we're concerned pretty much spot on with the results as we guessed! To summarise; for excitement value of the kit itself & what you get with the results I'd award 2 stars, but for the actual accuracy of the results (which is really all we want?) 5 stars!! FYI, In essence we have a half Greyhound with the other half a Saluki/Whippet Cross...so far no changes have been detected around the time of the full moon either!!

Expensive but worth every penny to know your dogs breed.
Pretty much bang on. Took around 6 weeks total from delivery to results. Was over the moon to find out what breed my dog is, and seems pretty accurate. Dog didn't mind the mouth swab too much but suppose every dog is different. I was a bit hesitant paying £80 as it is expensive in my eyes, but for the sake of my sanity and possibility of owning a banned breed, well worth the money. Good news shes not a banned breed 🙏🏻 Safe to say if and when I get another dog and unsure on the breed I will definitely be repurchasing this as I have zero faults.

Impressive. Do it.
This is an amazing product. I was sceptical but in two weeks it proved me wrong. The process was easy, and quicker than stated. The report was comprehensive and I was surprised by the result. Great for a rescue dog. I think this was the most exciting thing I did this year, but that may say more about me than this product 😂😂

BEWARE - My advice - Don’t waste your money like I did.
BEWARE! To say I ‘m extremely disappointed with the results of this DNA test would be something of an understatement. I did NOT send a photo of my dog in, wanting the results to be based purely on his DNA sample. I had thought my dog to be a mixture of Labrador/ German shepherd / Husky based purely on his appearance and size but shortly after sending the sample in I came across an image on line that was an exact replica of my dog (apart from the size). It is obvious he has Turkish Kangal Shepherd Dog in his heritage - same very distinctive facial mask, dark ears, same short sandy coloured thick coat, same curly tail, even shares the same guardian type protective characteristics but at only 23” high compared to their 30-32” it was obvious he was a mixture. So… I was so looking forward to seeing what other forebears he had in his make-up and was bitterly disappointed to see that of the 18 breeds they had detected Kangal was not even mentioned (nor the Anatolian Shepherd dog which the Kangal is sometimes referred to). Indeed they reckoned he was 25% Terrier !!! With the top two mentioned breeds being 17 % Chihuahua 18 % Romanian Mioritic Shepherd dog ( I’d never heard of it but it looks a bit like an Old English Sheepdog) All the other 16 breeds were in single digit % and ranged through Pekingese, poodle, St Bernard, seemed like they were hedging their bets lol but no mention of the one breed he has most in common with in both looks and temperament. How can they possibly get it so wrong? Did they mix the samples up? Will be interesting to see what their response to my email is - if I ever get one! My advice - don’t waste your money. I learnt the hard way!!!

Great detail on genetic background
It’s easy to use and comes with detailed results going back three generations. My puppy was teething and still it wasn’t difficult to get the samples.
