RATHER AVERAGE ADAPTATION
I'm not sure that Sondheim musicals translate that well from stage to film; something of the great man's subtlety and wit seems to get lost in the process, and so it is with this production. It isn't a bad film, but you'd find it hard to believe that this was based on a hugely successful and long-running stage show. As with the film version of "Sweeney Todd" there is too much effort put into cinematic effects and not enough into the music and, more especially, the lyrics. As a record of Sondheim's work it serves up to a point, but I would far rather see a proper version of the stage production.

Dreadful music and lyrics, ruins the film completely.
Oh dear.Great cast, played parts well. However, that seems to be the problem.A film has a certain budget and they seem to have spent way too much on the stars salary.Spoiler. It is a blend of certain old panto material like, Cinderella, Giant beanstalk and then mashes them up.It doesn't work though. Finally the budget I mentioned...Why didn't you hire a decent composer. The music was the worst I've heard in a film like this.It was cringe worthy.

Beautiful Music from Sondheim
This music is not for "easy listening", but if you give it a chance you'll end up addicted like me. I can't get enough of Sondheim's musicals, and this one is no exception. Excellent cast, excellent scenery and retelling. They also sell some very faithful piano accompaniments if you feel brave enough to attempt them.

Excellent film
I love this film - I went to see it in the cinema with my son's partner (we didn't take my grandchild!!!) and we thoroughly enjoyed it - so much so that when it came up on Prime I just had to buy it. After a few weeks I got a chance to sit and watch it again. Such a nice film. Exceptional cast, awesome scenery and special effects and brilliant acting. Great singing and clever music. Lovely

Drivel
This is dreadful and how so much money was spent creating such tosh is beyond my comprehension. The music was grating at best, the multiple story lines so convoluted that one had no emotional investment in the story or half a dozen princes wandering around in those god forsaken woods. Meryl Streep was wonderful, as expected, as was Johnny Depp, sizzling as the wolf, unfortunately singing the most pedophilic song this side of Garry Glitter, about all the things he wished to do to the flesh of a "little girl".Give yourself an enema, it'll be more enjoyable.

The most boring film I have ever watched
That was an endurance and a half. Captain underpants used to be my least favourite film ever but this one beats it easily. The songs were boring, the story rubbish. My favourite part, the credits. Would far rather have spent the evening cleaning the toilet with my tongue. .

“our film” ~ my girlfriend 2017
not as good as the play, but they took it off netflix, and i had to buy it, and it wasn’t cheap, but my girlfriend made me buy it because apparently it is, and i quote, “our film” and i honestly don’t see how, because the prince cheats on the princess with some random chick and then she dies. #spoiler. yeah whatever, three stars.

Good Family Musical
.This is a good entertaining musical.High quality cast. The movie features many different fairy tales and their varied characters blended together to form a continuous adventure as each follow their own quest through the woods. Johnny Depp's perfect as the wolf and Star Treks Chris Pine in good voice among many others .Which characters will find a happy ending ? It's too busy a plot for very young children and Meryl Streep makes a scary witch, but older kids and adults should find this fun.
