Solid piece of kit.
As others have pointed out, it's a bit awkward to release the cable on your own but it is doable, just attach the cable hook on something static, use both hands to release the pawls and pull away from the hook. Solid equipment and at this price point, it already paid for itself in the single intended use I had for it.

Good Value but
Works very well for the price. Heavy dutyish but a bit suspicious about 4 ton rating. Used to recover 2.3 ton vehicle and fine except at high load tension release requires a bar and 2 people. Lower loads can do on own. Release is not the best feature. My solution was to use a rachet strap in the pulling line for quick release. Handle works well. Its value for money and useful but wouldn't buy for everyday use.

5* Amazing value but at this price I accept the limitations
I wanted to pull large bamboo cluster (about 1.5m x1.5m). After a lot of digging I realised it was going to take days to get it out.Achieved anchor to a couple of trees and had the root ball out in 20min and wasn’t too tired at the end.The cable is short (1.5-2m) and so had to re-shorten the rope that led to anchor - using a strong ratchet strap would have been a winner. Many comments mention the locking mechanism: took a few goes but it’s easy- First slide the spring that engages the ratchet and is linked to long lever to the other side of the slot it sits in. Take one lever action slowly and as the lever returns it will release the spring. The use an object (I used a spade blade but it would be much better with a small hammer or use a screwdriver as a lever. Dosing age the spring - now hole both springs away from ratchet and pull (leaving hook attached to something solid). If you are using brute force than you are probably doing it wrong.

Good kit but poor instructions
Overall very pleased with this product. Whilst the instruction book is a little short on instructions it was easy enough to work out how to operate the winch. On the first use when I released the cable the securing pin came loose from the winch housing and was a pain to return it. Now I cannot fully extend the cable without it falling out on each occasion.I bought it to help remove leylandii conifer trunks that had been in the ground for 25 years and it succeeded very well.

Would be a good Winch - but it is damaged!
The actual Winch would work great - however this arrives severely damaged - tried to return - but our local post office has had issues process - so I am going to be left with a damaged winch. Seems in transit the return plate has been bent in making the cable extremely hard to come out - not so much of an issue going back in as the winch has power to winch it in.Like I said I have these in the past and when it arrives in good condition - they do work greatScored low as it really is hard to use as it has been damaged

No instructions
The winch seems sturdy and can generate a good pulling force. Only issue is that there are no instructions - yes it is fairly obvious how to use it, but I initially struggled to find a method to safely release the winch while it was under strain.

Works really well but…
You need to know what you’re doing with this device but it is an excellent piece of kit and very powerful. The three stars are only because the cable detached itself from the cylinder during use and I had to work hard to get it back into place. I bought it to haul out some stubborn plants and bamboo. It did the job and I’ll probably never use it again. Handy to have though and not expensive.

does what it says on the tin- as they say :)
great bit of kit - used it to straighten a bent winch bumper on my truck using this winch, a 4 ton strap and two trees - nose the bumper against the first tree (to pull against so the truck doesnt move, and you dont bend the chassis) strap around the second tree (about 6-10 feet away from the first) hook one end of the winch to the strap and the other hook to the bumper (hand a rug over the bumper end of the winch cable to prevent it flipping back and smashing your teeth out if the hook lets go under tension ) and winch away :) straightened the bumper in about ten mins ( after about half an hour looking for some trees to use) where local garages had told me they wouldn't touch it.keep it in the truck now - greased and ready to go when needed again.top marks :)
