Yes, that’s correct. Tool steel forge welded to a malleable steel back. The back of the blade is hollow ground to cut down sharpening time.

Q: Would like to use this Japanese plane but would it do for flattening the face of a board? The usual western plane would be a No.5 - much longer.

The senkichi works very well , but I suppose the longer the blade the better. Also the weight of a western plane may help you with a lot of work . Especially with a long board. Never been able to afford a descent number 5 plane though.
