Flags of the World

UP TO DATE AS OF 2011
Whatever the header line to the product page says, my copy of this book of flags is current at least as far as 2011. In that year the new state of South Sudan was founded, and more spectacularly 2011 also saw the fall of Gaddafi. The change in Libya involved a change of flag, the revolution scrapped Gaddafi’s plain green flag, and it is the new flag that you can find here if you get the right copy of the book. Some other policy decisions have had to be taken in issuing the volume. The status of Transnistria and South Ossetia is uncertain, so you will not find them here. The status of Northern Cyprus is not even uncertain – it is recognised by no other nation except Turkey, so you would certainly not expect to find it represented.Otherwise I hope I’m being realistic in getting this attractively printed book for my elder grandson, coming up for four on St Valentine’s Day. I shall be agreeably surprised if his reading is up to deciphering the text for himself, but it is easy to understand and it might be useful for developing his memory, depending on what his parents think and how interesting he finds the book. I didn’t spot any flags missing, but I was not looking for the Scottish Saltire being myself a supporter of an ongoing union with England. It would probably have been wasting space to give a full-page display to every flag, but you will have to live with a certain amount of inconsistency in consequence. The full-scale efforts list out a few details of area, highest point, currency, capital city and official language, but the two/four per page nations just get their capitals stated. Young students (or parents, or grandparents come to that) can add internet skills to their developing portfolio if they are eager for this additional information. In my schooldays we were at least taught geography even though it led to no exam qualifications, but in my children’s generation it seemed not even to be taught. It is not a subject we should be ignorant of, and I hope tentatively that this nicely produced and edited book may help with that situation.

Beautiful, very good quality book
Beautiful book, very good quality glossy pages, a pleasure to handle. Lovely, clear photos. Just enough information to interest children but not to overwhelm them. I bought it for a 4 year old grandson, who is obsessed with flags at the moment. I think the book is meant for slightly older children, but it can be used at all levels. My grandson and I both love it. Very interesting, with explanations about the symbols of the flag, and I am learning with him !

excellent!
I was a little worried there would be too much writing to the detriment of fun learning. It turns out to be just fine. The flags are well illustrated, with some basic info about the country like capital and size. It also gives a short, but very interesting history of the flag, like its origins and what the colours, patterns and symbols on the flags represent. But not too much. One thing I find excellent, it tends to group flags within the same region by ressemblance, highlighting the differences. Great for learning, and also just for reference. Not sure who likes it more, my 7-year old son or me.

Very good book
I almost didnt buy this because i wasnt able to look inside, i bought it solely based of the excellent reviews and im glad i did. I purchased this for my five year old son who has recently become obsessed with drawing flags so i wanted a book which displayed large pictures of flags and flat, not waving as some of the others had. This book is perfect for that and im sure when he is a little older he will be interested in the accompanying information also.

Informative for children and adults.
I bought this for my 7 year old grandson who showed an interest in flags of different countries. He loved it, not just the full page pictures of flags but also the written descriptions and information of countries. A very informative book well laid out that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Story of life in Flags
The book is very knowledgeable with all details of how flags give a story of the way people lived and see things in colour from their surroundings.
