PROXXON27023 series of five Tools for turning

Bought this as a gift for someone who's into woodturning (as a hobby) but he hasn't started doing yet due to availability and resources. However, when I received it, I thought they really looked durable and heavy duty.

These arrived unsharpened, so I had to order some sharpening tools before use. I intentionally didn't buy any sharpening tools, as I wanted to see the chisels first and work out the best method. I bought the EZE Lap Hone & Stone Diamond file set of 3 and some green stropping compound. Only really needed the super fine file, but nice to have the set for other jobs. On such small chisels it would be silly to use a grinder, too harsh and unnecessary. The files worked a treat with just a few passes and a strop on some leather I had laying around.I'm a complete beginner and have only watched a few videos to get an idea of how to use each tool. On first use, the results from these chisels are excellent, very clean cut and finish on birch and beech, no tear outs. Obviously the more practice I get, the better the finished piece. I'm still getting used to the delicate movements needed to achieve certain shapes and angles.Why the 4 stars? First, I'd expect them to be already sharpened and ready to use. The parting tool is brilliant but isn't tapered inward, meaning there's a tendency for the tool and stock to heat up with the friction from either side of the tool. That could result in loss of hardness especially at the tip. I'm still working out the difference between a bowl gouge and a spindle gouge. The larger gouge I think is a bowl, but the teeny gouge looks like a round nose spindle. I think I would prefer a more fingernail shape for those detailed bits.I've also found I have to sharpen more frequently than I thought I'd need to. It could be because I haven't got the hang of using the chisels properly and I'm a bit too aggressive. Or I just haven't sharpened them evenly. Maybe I just like them super sharp:)All in all, these are a great beginners set for small and detail work, perfect with Proxxons DB250 lathe.

Very good quality and nice steel. I use them for finer detailing when woodturning and they work really well. They feel solid and stay sharp so very pleased with these.

Very small and cheaply made. I would expect to pay about £12 for these they cost me more than £50. Not sharp. Might be OK for making wooden jewellery or parts for models but other wise avoid, complete waste of money. The size quoted is for the box they come in not the tools.... on other sites they are described as mini chisel set.

I was disappointed by the size/length of these chisels. They would be ok for smaller turning items but not for anything over a few centimetres in diameter.

Useful for small items.

Ideal for turning masts on model boats

They arrived in a neat box and were well shaped but there was no edge at all on any of the tools. We've got the equipment to sharpen them but would expect them to arrive ready to go.

Det märks att Proxxon köpt in dessa från en billigt (asiatiskt?) land. OK men inte den förväntade tyska kvalitén.

Las he probado y sunque soy solo aficionado, me parecen bien afiladas. Seguramente las habra mejores, pero creo que tienen una buena relacion calidad-precio.

Although a bit pricy, these are nicely made and comfortable to use on the Proxxon mini-lathe.

Très très bon produit je le recommande fortement qualité prix au top présenter en coffret bois précisons qu'il sont pour travaux sur petit tour à bois acier HSS de très bonne fabrication a voir dans le temps pour usure et affûtage et grand merci à Amazon de toujours proposer des produits et vendeurs d'aussi bonne qualité à bientôt 👍
