Big and a bargain
I bought this to replace my 13 year old Cambridge Audio model, whose laser had failed fro the second time. I have been planning to get the CD6006 and hadn't contemplated the CD5005 as it being a lesser model (snobbery, most likely). I spotted a comparison chart between the 5005 and 6006. Same DAC (and same DAC as in the PM6006 amp I already have) and the only obvious difference is the omission of USB, which was of no interest to me anyway. A bit more research implied that generally people seemed not to be able to tell much difference between the 5005 and 6006. Then came a Warehouse sale day and there was a CD5005 for £132, minor scratches on facia and sides, so I took a punt. On arrival I checked carefully and could see no scratches at all. Everything intact and apparently still sealed. It worked fine. I think the original buyer opened the box and thought "Jeez that's too big!" and sent it back. Pros - Sound is excellent. I swear I can hear things in tracks that the Cambridge failed to bring out. It does have a much better DAC. - Plays mp3 (and some other lossy formats). - Usability is good. Simple though not as quick of the mark as the Cambridge was, either starting up or playing a cd. - Silent in operation. - Matched to my PM6006 it means I use just one control and they devices look similar, if aesthetics are important. - Headphone amp seems good. I often use it rather than plugging the headphones into the amp. - Value for money is excellent at £190 or less - You can switch the display off. Supposedly it improves sound quality, but I can't tell any difference. - Manual volume control for headphones. - Build quality seems good. Cons - Its a big beastie. Its depth can be 6cm more than some other players. - Won't play flac. - No eject button on remote (should you care for reasons I fail to understand). All-in-all, I am a happy bunny.

Marantz CD 5005 player.
After 25 years ( yeah really ) I thought my old Sony cd player had seen better days! I got the version without the USB socket as I don't have an ipad or anything like it. Well, what can I say! I think it would be fair to say things have moved on in those 25 years, this player is awesome. First thing, it's quite impressive when you get it out of the box. It's kind of big and bold, and feels pretty substantial plus it feels well built. Obviously connects up quickly, and within minutes the first cd is in. Like always trying to describe sound is almost impossible but here goes. If you have a half decent vinyl set up it will remind you of that, you can listen for hours without feeling any kind of fatigue. The detail it pulls off those little discs is unbelievable, and I know it's a cliche but some of your discs really will sound like you have'nt heard them before. I am truly amazed at it, and another thing is that when the going gets tough - as in a lot of different sounds and instruments are all playing - it just sorts them all out. I can't imagine anyone being unhappy about this player other than it almost sounds too smooth and rounded. If your system is kind of flat sounding I don't think this will help it at all, but if what you have already is a nice sounding system this should fit right in. The only thing I miss is the display the old Sony had, they were like a calender sort of look, whereas I find modern cd players look almost apologetic with the displays most of them have. Have'nt listened on headphones yet but I believe it's very good. I have absolutely no regrets about buying the Marantz or about buying the cheaper version, you will save yourself about £100 into the bargain. Whilst on the subject of money has anyone else noticed the way every shop in the last week has put the cd 6005 up from £249 to £299? Looks VERY suspicious to me , and makes the cd5005 an even better bargain. Go on, you know you want one!

One of the best CD players in the price range.
Reluctantly had to replace my 19-year-old Rotel CD player when it started mis-reading tracks and skating about like Robin Cousins. Can't complain at 19 years of great service. Would have gone for Rotel again, but then started looking at much cheaper alternatives and the Marantz name kept coming up as a quality product at reasonable - or in the case of the CD5005 extremely reasonable - cost. Amazon Prime's next day free delivery clinched the deal. The unit arrived safely packaged in a brown box inside another bigger box with tons of brown paper providing extra cushioning. Unpacking was straightforward and a Quick Start gets you going right away, though if you want to know all the intricacies of the player you will need to view the Owner's Manual on provided CD. I have an external (Beresford) DAC and the Marantz has a coaxial connector at the rear for connection so I was able to flip between the Marantz on-board DAC and the Beresford for comparison. My conclusions? You won't need to connect the Marantz to an external DAC as the sound quality is superb as it comes. The stereo spacing, definition, crispness and clarity were all outstanding, and pretty much out-performed the ancient Rotel in all regards - and at much less than half the price of the original. Nineteen years of developing technology really has made a difference. For reference, I listen mainly to classical music with some classic rock, and the Marantz handles both with aplomb. The unit is totally silent in operation and there are 3 Sound Modes (I'd recommend EX1) and a display dimmer if you want to get very pure playback . A headphone socket provides crystal clear music for your cans too. I still use my ancient Rotel RC-972/RB-981 combo for amplification plus Linn Keilidh floor standers, and the Marantz sounds as good if not better than anything I've ever connected up. Streaming music is great but there's still something more personal in choosing just one album to focus your ears on, plus you never have to worry about the Internet dropping out. I'm re-discovering some music I didn't even know I had on CD! Criticisms? None, really. The packaging may have been a little OTT but it certainly meant the contents arrived securely. The remote is designed for a whole Marantz system so you'll only use a few buttons, but that's easy enough to understand. One slight concern might be the size of the Marantz. It's about twice as high and a little deeper than the Rotel and quite heavy too. None of that bothers me as I have a hi-fi rack (like it's 1975 or something) but if you're tight for space check with your tape measure. So, I'm delighted with the Marantz CD5005. Sad to see the Rotel go but its replacement is a cause for celebration.

Love it.
I bought this to pair with a PM6006 amp as my old TEAC eject mech was playing up, and am really happy with the choice. Firstly it's nice to have matching units and the build quality is as expected from Marantz. The 6006 amp remote works both units so only one remote is required for operation. A handy feature of both remotes is separate power buttons for each unit. It has auto standby so no need to remember to switch it off after use and it wakes up again as soon as the eject button is pressed, this may well work for play too but I've yet to try it. The 6006 amp is similar in that to wake it up a flick on the input selector is all that's needed,, no need to rely on a remote all the time. The CD tray moves smooth and quietly unlike some cheaper brands. There is a wired remote RCA connector on the back with a switch that allows wired remote control from an amp or wireless from a Marantz remote. It also has RCA, digital RCA and digital optical outputs allowing multiple connection options depending on system set-up. I use the Optical and the sound is brilliant, there is no white noise from any of the components. The low end frequency response seems to be better than my old player too allowing my Tannoy floor standers to really shake the foundations. There are many other features such as Info display, again something some cheaper players just don't do, strange considering that just about cheap car stereo does ! It will play mp3 files from a disc but i can see the point in having a quality CD player to play poor quality MP3 on. Some may find this an advantage, I just put CDs in it. All round I am 100% satisfied with the player and would recommend it, particularly when pairing with other Marantz devices.

Audiophile piece of kit at budget price.
Fantastic sound and great build quality how ever the universal remote that comes with it is confusing and has loads of buttons you don't need and although you can load a CD with it you have to push the button on the player to remove it. That aside it's an audiophile piece of kit at a budget price.

Marantz CD5005 CD
Marantz CD5005 CD player, I purchased in back in 2020. Marantz is renowned for being a good product. The quality from this CD player is amazing. Last year I purchased a Marantz amplifier & is now linked to the CD player the quality & sound is excellent. Recommend to anyone who likes higher end HiFi systems!

Worth the money.
My Marantz CD player from the '90s gave up the ghost so I was in the market for a new machine. I still use my Amp', Deck, and Tape player from the late '70s and was worried that electronic technology has left me behind, and that finding a comparable new CD player might be a problem. The display on Amazon that shows the rear side of the 5005 looked like it had all the same connections of my equipment so I took a chance; well Marantz had given me more than two decades of good service so far, so why not. When I opened the packaging I was surprised at just how big the 5005 is. My old machine was only two thirds the width depth and height. It is strange that with modern electronics that this machine is so big, I assume it is mainly an empty case as it weighs very little more than my old model. That's the down side, and the reason why it looses the first star. The instructions supplied are on CD for use on a Mac/PC are very clear; mind you the question has to be asked; what if you do not own a computer! It annoys me that every manufacturer assumes you can either go on the internet or read a disc to learn how to operate your new purchase. So the lack of a book in the box is why it looses star number two. The machine works well as a CD player, it obviously is built for digital output but give the option of Analogue output optimisation, which is great for my equipment. So if like me you are still happy with an old Amp' then this kit will work for you. The remote works as it should but most of it is redundant in my case as I do not have a Marantz amp so can not control volume output, balance etc. etc. The sound quality is good, clear sound separation and range. Worth the money. The sound quality is good but the u

Superb.
Through Tascam self-powered home monitors, Zoom R24 desk/interface. Insightful, detailed, musical, weight and timing beautifully judged as is usual with Marantz players and - quiet. Drift on the emotions? Check. Rock on? Check. Party the house? Check. Replaces a CD52 Mk2 se (no mean player in its class at the time) and straight away, it's great - better weight and clarity and a very natural soundstage. Big - so what? At the price? Hard to think of better. No regrets at all about this. The remote? Well, it's got one. I hate the things. Just one teentsy weentsy little thing - what I'm listening through isn't rubbish but I've very quickly become aware that this player will support much, much better speakers than mine. Dollars.........
