Does this item need to be clamped to the worktop, or is it free-standing, and what is the minimum holding width, please?

It does not need to be clamped to a worktop. However, I would recommend clamping the two blue posts together, as they are prone to sliding under pressure. The minimum holding width is just over 7mm, where the clamps will be touching each other. There's approximately a 3mm groove in each of them.

Would this pcb holder be suitable for holding a cree star led?

Hi This is essentially a small vice that enables the user to securely hold printed circuit boards and rotate them for inspection/repair/ & building up. I cannot say it wont do as you ask ,but would point out that its intended purpose is primarily for circuit boards and the slotted jaws are sized to suit. Hope this helps.

Is there a minimum PCB holding size?

It’s a great bit of kit, I wish I had bought one sooner. The smallest PCB I use is 15mm x 50mm and it copes well with that. Don’t forget that the end supports are 3mm deep at each end so you have 6mm total that is not exposed, but you can turn the board through 90deg. if you need to. Smallest board to work sensibly I would say is maybe 15mm x 15mm. Hope this helps.

The boards are isolated from the workbench by the plastic support pillars, therefore if your soldering iron is esd safe and you wear a grounding strap esd is not a problem.
