Q: Is this a strong rope? Would it be capable of holding up something at least a few hundred pounds? Has anyone experienced it breaking or snapping?

Definitely strong. No issues with breaking. Have had it for over a year. It has been outside. Using it to fence off an area . Seems strong … probably would hold 1,000 pounds!

Q: does it have coated plastic at the 2 ends? I need it for tug of war competition. Also is it soft enough not to hurt their hands?

The ends of this rope are taped with a plastic or vinyl tape. (approx. 2 in. wide) As for being soft, I don't want to say "soft" but I don't think this rope will hurt anyone's hands. I've already had rope that felt like a it was made up of branches from a sticker bush. This does not have that feel. I was able to handle it comfortably and my hands are soft. In my opinion I feel this rope would be fine. It IS rope, but not "thorny".
