Should be a lot better
I used the forerunner of this text long ago, when I was in high school, and I rented it to help my nephew, now in high school. I am dismayed at the changes that have been made. The book looks like it has been edited paragraph-by-paragraph by a committee. Important topics (e.g., free silver) are mentioned in passing but not developed. Others (e.g., the Mexican War) are discussed only in a superficial way as they relate to other events. Many important topics (e.g., the Bank Acts of the 1860's) have been left out altogether. The net result is that the text, by itself, provides no useful knowledge and can't be at all helpful in writing essays for the AP exam. The book has gone from a normal-sized backpack-book to a gigantic behemoth of a door-stopper while actually losing a lot of content. It has been stuffed with photographs, diagrams, "learning activity" recommendations, and margins full of tendentious out-of-context "quote art" in size 42 font.US History is a minefield for the teacher, but anybody should be able to agree that there are several vitally important historical subjects every citizen needs to know: constitutional law, federal finance and monetary policy, military history and technology. All of these are inadequately covered by this text and some are hardly mentioned. In their place an inordinate amount of "identity politics" have been inserted. When a US history text spends almost as much space on Malcolm X as on the Civil War, it belongs in the dumpster.Teachers know a US history text has to be extensively supplemented with other texts. But the main textbook should be useful to students and this one just isn't. At best, the text should be a resource for students in preparing for the AP exam and this one is almost useless. The only thing more depressing than the sight of my nephew trying to study for his AP exam from this textbook is the thought that the AP exam might actually be based on this textbook.

Good book
I bought this textbook due to the recent trend of canceling the history of our nation that had picked up a lot of momentum this summer. I wanted to be able to preserve some kind of way to share the story of our founding with my younger kids and future grandkids in the event history is ban and things keep heading in the direction they are, which is a little too similar to communism in my opinion. Plus the sell included a cute little note inside which was a nice personal touch..

Great refresher of the US foundation.
With the impeachment trial going on, and everything else in our nation today, I wanted a refresher course of the founding of our country. This book helped me to better see where we've been, how we got there, and what we must do for a better tomorrow. A great refresher course that can spring you into doing more research into the topics covered.
