Very life like flame effect which you can vary using the remote. Not too noisy when you consider that you must have a fan motor running to push the heat out. There is a tiny noise with just the flame effect running produced by the spinning disc motor for the flane effect. The fire is well made and good quality after all it is a Dimplex. If you want this fire as a stand alone you have to purchase a spacer (search on line) that costs about £30.

Fitted the fire into the gap left after removing a gas fire. It was easy to fit after adjusting the height of the legs at the back. I had an electric cable feed in place for the gas fire so removed the plug fitted to the electric fire and joined it to the cable using a small junction box. Looks very nice. We put the crystals in the front. Could have chosen from wood effect branches or coal or combined them. The flame effect without heating is good and the convector is quite quiet..Would recommend to get room warmed up before central heating takes effect or before central heating comes on.

This is visually very nice & flame effect is good. We have a Dimplex Dumfries for years & very happy with it, especially its very quiet fan. It fits well in an 18" fireplace but we hit a major snag with the Helmsdale - it won't fit in the 16" opening for which it was bought, being just a few mm too wide due to side vents. If used with full spacer frame it would be fine but we wanted inset. Have to say Amazon's handling of return request, including courier collection due to its weight & my age, was absolutely outstanding. For info to potential buyers, the fireplace opening concerned was 406mm wide by 560 high. General quality of the fire acceptable compared to our older Dumfries but the fan seemed much noiser & controls harder to get at, but remote is available now.

Lovely looking heavy fire, with great flame effect.Unfortunately had to return as although opening of my fire grate measured up ok , the depth of the fire instet fouled against some brickwork to the rear of grate. ( this model doesn't come with an adapter - must be purchased separately)I bought another model of Dimlex fire , same quality etc but came with an optional adapter which I used.

UPDATED 30th October. Had developed a rattle when on Optiflame only ( no heat of fan ). Contacted Dimplex who didn't want to know. "it is under 30 days contacted the vendor". I contacted the useless Amazon chat line. They basically couldn't care less. Told me there was no way they could exchange it I can return it, the fact it won't fit in my car was totally lost on them and joy of joys I get to wait a couple of weeks for the 360 pounds back.Easy to install as it was replacing a similar fire insert. Optiflame effect much superior to the old dancing ribbons and bulb. Remote control has issues in as much as the transmitter led seems fairly narrow beam so tends to be very directional. The main gripe is it is noisy, it wasn't but is now. two weeks old. There is a constant low frequency rattle and that is bad enough but it also changes frequency every so often so one can not even get "used to it". I shall be taking this issue up with Geln/Dimplex because this is not a cheap DIY shed electric fire.
