Janacek: Jenufa [Asmik Grigorian; Elena Zilio; Nicky Spence; Royal Opera House; Henrik Nánási] [Opus Arte: OABD7302D] [2022]

I was at ROH for a live performance with this cast and it was a fabulous evening. I never expected a blu ray recording to capture that but in the end purchased a disc to keep my library collection complete. I'm so glad I did because the filming and the quality of the sound is absolutely stunning and revealed so much extra to me. OK the production and set with its extra symbolism is a bit distracting but that's a very minor criticism. All in all its strengths make it worthy of ranking as a legendary performance. Firstly the conducting by Henrik Nanasi reveals his wonderful insight into Janacek music - moments of dreams then tension and dramatic conflict, all in the Czech rustic style. He's right up there with Mackerras and Rattle. Then Karita Mattila, still an amazing dramatic soprano and performer. Mesmerisingly brilliant. Similarly Asmik Gregorian. What an artist. What a future she has in her grasp. Nicky Spence was so in character too. A faultless portrayal with a voice perfectly suited to Janacek's operas. Don't skip the curtain call and applause to reassure you just what a unique and wonderful performance this is.

Fairly interesting production of acts 1 and 3 but act 2 is a disaster. The sound quality is not up to the usual bluray standard with the orchestra often overpowering the singers whose vocal contrinution is thereby diminished. Overall - disappointing.

The Seller did everything right. As for the opera, this is a superb performance. It appears that everyone ups their game when performing with Ms. Grigorian. Wonderful acting and singing.

Asmik Grigorian et Karita Mattila exceptionnelles comme chanteuses évidemment mais aussi comme actrices. La jeune soprano lituanienne est déchirante de vérité (quel regard !) et Karita Mattila épanouit son chant plus l'oeuvre avance. Steva et Laca magnifiques comme l'ensemble de la distribution et superbe interprétation de l'orchestre. Je suis beaucoup moins enthousiaste sur la mise en scène. Que viennent faire des éplucheuses de patates dans le moulin familial ? Et la maison transformée en cage ? Pour montrer que Jenufa est prisonnière des convenances ? Souvent, les metteurs en scène prennent les spectateurs pour des incultes pour nous dire "vous voyez, voilà ce qu'il faut comprendre". Jenufa ce n'est pas Germinal ! Pas de critique du monde industriel et de l'aliénation ouvrière. C'est un drame familial dans un village morave au 19e siècle sur fond de jalousie amoureuse et de réputation familiale ternie par la "faute" de Jenufa. Le nouveau-né est une tâche sur l'honneur et la renommée de la riche famille propriétaire du moulin. Il doit disparaître ! Rarement un opéra n'aura été aussi loin dans la noirceur. Certes, la fin semble heureuse en dépit du crime : confession publique du meurtre, la justice va faire son oeuvre et Jenufa et Laca vont se marier... par défaut. Là encore, dans le sublime aria final, on attend autre chose que les deux protagonistes côte à côte sans même échanger un regard et ne se prenant pas par la main ! La version Glynbourne plus ancienne certes et sans HD est LA version de référence (avis personnel) tant elle est vocalement parfaite et respectueuse des intentions du livret : Roberta Alexander, Anja Silja (!), Philip Langridge et Mark Baker tous exceptionnels.
