M. Graham 1/2-Ounce Tube Gouache Paint, Raw Sienna

This has quickly become my favorite brand of gouache. I have tried everything from Lukas, to Holbein, to Winsor and Newton. These have good lightfastness quality. Although Naphthol Red is not quite as lightfast, but it is a problem in other bands as well. The white is terrific. And it can be bought in 37ml tubes. It has a honey binder and holds up well after drying in a traditional watercolor well. They reconstitute very well. They have terrific opacity and do not contain any chalk. So they do not dry chalky. I like Winsor and Newton but they sometimes crack and seperate from a pan after a few weeks where I don’t have the problem with these. They are so worth it, and the price is terrific. The color vibrancy is great as well. The only drawback is that I have to go to other brands for certain colors as most gouache manufacturers have a limited palette of colors. This is the only brand with a paynes grey, although it seems more like a pale black and is missing some of that blueness you get in a paynes grey watercolor.

I've only ever used super cheap, student gouache in the past, and these are the first high quality paints I've ever splurged on. I'm so glad I did! Honestly, the very first huge difference I noticed between my old gouache and these is when I left them to dry in my palette. The cheap gouache always gets super crumbly, chalky, and tends to flake right off and these M.Graham paints were still holding on tight. The pigment is so beautiful and opaque, they dry quickly, rewet wonderfully, and they don't have that strong smell my old gouache paints did. There's plenty in each tube to last a long time, for me anyway, as I tend to work small. They arrived in great condition. I'm so pleased, I already ordered more colors, though I've been having a lot of fun going back to basics and seeing how much I can do with primary colors. I don't have any experience with other big-name brands of gouache, besides the cheap-o ones I'd been using, but I've heard a lot of really great things about these paints and I'm inclined to agree after using them!

Excellent paint from M. Graham, as usual. Smooth and creamy right out of the tube, and keeps this consistency for a decent amount of time until it inevitably starts drying, like any paint out there. In gouache painting, I find it useful to have both a titanium white and a zinc white (also called Chinese white in other brands). The titanium white is very opaque and great when used alone as a white highlight; the zinc white is less opaque, and because of this it tends to mix cleaner, brighter colors. I find that colors mixed with titanium white tend to have a certain cast to them.

Purpose: I bought this to use in my watercolor paintings, specifically to paint parts of clouds. I was previously using Chinese White but that didn't really work as it is primarily a white used for mixing and I wanted to use something more opaque for the effect I was trying to achieve.I noticed that this watercolor simply cannot hold a concentrated pigment! When I first put the paint onto the page it looks extremely dense and opaque. But after I come back after 5 minutes I realized that the white has completely dissipated and melted on the page, revealing the color underneath. This happens regardless of how much water I use. I have even used this on almost dry paper and a barely damp brush to have the same bleeding effect happen. This is probably due to the consistency of the paint - it is very watery. Almost no water is needed to "activate" this paint.Summary: if you are trying to get an opaque white effect in your watercolor paintings, I highly do not recommend this paint.

Excellent middle yellow; I'm also a huge fan of M. Graham's watercolor paint in the same shade. A warm yellow is also useful and common in traditional palettes, but a middle yellow is more versatile for making clean mixes. It can be cooled down with greens or warmed up with reds, and sometimes it's beautiful just by itself as well. If I had to choose only one yellow, I'd pick a middle yellow such as this one. Note that gouache tends to be more abrasive on brushes than regular watercolor paints, so I'd advise setting aside a separate set of synthetic watercolor brushes to be abused by gouache, if it won't break the bank.

M. Graham makes the nicest paints. this is no exception. It's really fantastic. It comes out of the tube a fantastic consistency and lays down on paper opaque without streaking. Even adding to a cheaper gouache like arteza it improves the consistency and reduces streaking. Love this stuff.

Why on earth does this have only a three star rating?! I have never had absolutely any issue mixing or layering these paints- these are the BEST gouache paints I (and quite seriously, literally every other artist I know) have ever used. These gouache paints are worth every single penny.M Graham's gouaches have incredibly rich pigments, and by using honey in the base these have a consistency, flow, and beautiful texture both wet and dry that is just better than every other brand. No I'm not endorsed or sponsored by them ( but I would absolutely jump at the chance heh) but these particular goache paints play up the very best of gouaches abilities- thick and straight from the tube these have a richness of them that plays perfectly to making oil-like paintings, and diluted these have a saturation in the pigments to make stunning watercolours that aren't hazy or dull.I bought this for a birthday gift for my friend, who is also a fellow artist. Its VERY difficult to get any M. Graham paints in Ontario, and their gouache paints, especially, are like the search for the holy grail.I'm very grateful to Hyatt's (the seller when I purchased) for the good packaging on the box and that it shipped with tracking and without costing me an arm extra for additional duties fees.This was a decent price for the 5 basic colour set. And the shipping fees were minimal. A trip to Manhattan to go to art stores there would have cost me significantly more money. :)

I love this gouache! It’s very easy to control and use. You can apply it thinly or very thick and opaque without it clumping on your paintbrush. You can make the thinnest of lines with it and gradually build it to get the most realistic highlights! I used to use a white gel pen and I absolutely loathed it—it was clumpy, hard to control the application correctly and it would not apply in a predictable way on the painting or drawing and leave a textured mess. This gouache is matte and as opaque as you want it to be without adding a texture to your painting or drawing. I highly recommend it!

M. Graham gouache is probably my favourite of any gouache paint. The addition of honey into their emulsion prevents it from getting too hard and cracking. This gouache stays so smooth.Pigments are rich, and it is very smooth. It is almost impossible to find the gouache in Ontario, and last time I made a trip to New York because I just couldn't find it here. Being able to find any of them on Amazon is fantastic!

I have used this product in my latest painting. I love the versatility of the product, that I could apply it thickly with a palette knife or brush, and watered down to a watercolour-like paint.The one interesting thing that surprised me was discovering that someone with a bee/honey allergy could be affected by cross-contamination (a parent of one of my students let me know her daughter would need to wash carefully before coming home).
