Well-designed
Fantastic little filter. It may be affordable, but this is probably over-designed for the price point which is certainly a benefit to the end-user. Most hang-on-back filters like this do not have a surface skimmer. I've had several canister style filters with built-in surface skimmers, but those almost either never spin or spin for a bit and eventually just stop (and need constant cleaning). Immediately I noticed the intake tube for the surface skimmer is a smaller diameter than the main intake tube. There may be a few positions depending on your tank layout and where the filter is placed where the skimmer won't spin, but I've got it in a sweet spot where it spins constantly. It can spin quite fast too depending on the rate of flow which is adjustable. Once you open the filter, you'll find that the water intake tube then leads to a separate tube that feeds directly into the filter boxes, meaning the water goes straight into the filter box, runs through the media then comes back out into a gentle waterfall. There are two separate filter boxes which open into a small chamber which comes with some coarse foam sandwiched by fine filter pads. If you're looking for a filter that provides high flow throughout a nano tank, you might want to get a more powerful filter, but for everyone else this should be more than sufficient. When the filter is running it is nearly completely silent. There is a slight hum from the motor and at half-speed in my tank, the water falling into the tank makes zero noise. Really impressed by this filter. It is now going to be my primary choice for filtering nano tanks.

Way better than Aqeuon
I had to replace my previous Aqueon filter when it stopped working a few days after the warranty ran out. It was noisy at the beginning, but then just got more and more so until the motor burned out. I tried everything - cleaning it, replacing the pads, etc. Died anyway. So, I moved away from Aqueon and bought this one by Hygger. I had already bought their mini air pump with hose and small air stone for my tank and absolutely love how quiet it is. So, time to give their filter a chance. Holy cow is this thing quiet! I hardly know it's there. And I love how I can adjust the water flow, how it forces all of the water through the filter pad, and the surface skimmer is spinning right along. What a neat concept there! Now, as long as it doesn't fry up I'm golden!

Absolute garbage. DO NOT BUY.
This is a low range waterfall filter, and you should not buy it because it is a tremendous waste of space for what it does. I am an experienced fish keeper and run a fish shop attached to a garden center. Each year, I'll buy 10-20 affordable pieces of fish equipment (filters and heaters etc) from different suppliers, so I can recommend affordable options to customers. It's also great to have a store of 'backup' equipment ready to go in case some catastrophe strikes in the shop... Which leads me to my honest review: there is simply no reason to buy this filter. Its not good at anything it should be good at. The 'filter' itself is quite large... but the volume of it inside that is actually doing anything is tiny. Inside is a tiny filter box that is the size of any micro filter you may have owned previously. Yes, you read that right- most of the volume of the plastic case is just empty, mainly to achieve the spillover waterfall effect. One filter sponge (smaller than the size of a dollar bill) is all the filter can actually house. Some filters have capacity to add extra sponges / stones / carbon, but this filter deals very badly with any extra 'add ons' as the filter itself and the suction it provides is so weak already. Having a tiny filter box isn't criminal, but the issue is SO MANY OTHER waterfall filters for a similar price point do the job 1000 times better. The filter offers a small cog you can use to go from low flow to hi flow. I don't know if my model was broken, but I really didn't notice much of a difference on either setting. Even more irksome was the motor inside the filter is tiny and can get blocked by grains of sand etc. It honestly felt like my filter was missing a key part or something. DO NOT BUY - OTHER WATERFALL FILTERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE SAME PRICE POINT.

Better than I thought
I got this because I really needed a surface skimmer for my nano tank. I really didn't want to replace the filter I had because it was super quiet and effecent plus small. This one works really well I'm happy with it so far. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because the intake tube is way too long and I think it's causing issues with keeping the skimmer spinning as the instructions say "they can't overlap". I currently have the tube pretty much as far in as it will go and it still touches the bottom of my tank. I have to keep the water level higher than I usually do so that the skimmer will spin. My filter is also a bit noisy. I believe this is being caused by the skimmer as well as its quiet when the skimmer isn't moving. Overall I'm pretty satisfied as I no longer have to deal with all the surface scum and whatnot that used to be at the top of my tank. The water in my tank is crystal clear.

Great value
Good for small tanks. Five gallons or smaller.

Soundless plus Tip to Increase Flow Rate for Fresh Water Tank
1. Very, very quiet as is, but add two pieces of squishy foam, one on lip and one on back of tank and it becomes utterly soundless. (You will not believe how quiet it is.) 2. The accepted ratio for flow rate is 5. So, a 100 gph pump should support a 20 gal tank not a 5 to 8 gal as listed. For a fresh water tank, replace the protein skimmer tube with a 3/4 plastic hose extending from tank input tube to near the bottom of the tank. This will increase the top to bottom water turnover. Use open cell foam to block fish entrance. (Skimmer is of dubious value for fresh water.) 3. The filter is rather small so increase surface area for friendly bacteria by hiding open cell foam where you can.

I purchased this filter a while ago, along it's "twin" from Carefree Fish ( https://www.amazon.ca/Carefree-Fish-Waterfall-Circulator-Nitrifying/dp/B0BJ2VPP4W?ref_=v_sp_product_dpx&th=1 ) but never got to install them until today. They looked incredibly similar, so i couldnt help but to purchase both and put them to the test. I have a black setup and a white setup with my heaters and led ramps on my tanks, so i purchased one of each to play around with the color schemes and do an in depths comparison. DESIGN AND COLOR SCHEMES: Hygger - Black lid. Sticker brand, motor and little tab underneath are orange. The skimmer is greyish in color. Carefree Fish - White lid. Sticker brand and little tab underneath are aqua green. The skimmer is blueish in color. SKIMMERS: It took me forever to make this skimmer work. I even put the water levels, outflow, position of the skimmer exactly the same, nothing worked. I just now got the genius idea to switch the skimmer with the Carefree Fish... and it worked. I swapped it back and NOW it's working, guess it didnt want to be outshined by competition! NOISE LEVEL: Pretty much the same, all depends on your outflow. I will say however this one seem to give off a vibration from the lid, so make sure it's tightly put on or it will annoy the crap out of you. FILTER PADS: Hygger has their own filter pads to replace the one that comes in the box : https://www.amazon.ca/hygger-Filter-Cartridge-HG-027-Aquarium/dp/B0BX2BZ217?ref_=ast_sto_dp FILTER BOX: Im not sure how many box you're supposed to go through really, but i guess if you damage it by dropping it, you might get screwed and need a replacement ? Either way, i didnt see any replacement being sold by Hygger, but the ones from Carefree Fish will work just as good using the same patent. https://www.amazon.com/Carefree-Fish-SZWGGLH2-Filter-Box/dp/B0CK5X6THX/ref=sr_1_34?m=A1X90J63MCY2YE&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&qid=1704256635&s=merchant-items&sr=1-34 SIZE : Perfect for my 13 gallon tanks. Comes in a bigger size with a 2nd box and pad. If you want even bigger, you'll have to settle for the Carefree Fish filter that has 3 compartments. I've yet to see Hygger with a 3 compartments filter, but for nano tanks the small and medium filters are enough in my opinion. Little extra shoutout to Hygger : thank you SO MUCH for making a WHITE / AQUA heater. Almost melds in with my background but also fits perfectly with the Carefree Fish's color scheme. So even if you go with Carefree Fish for the filter, you'll find a Hygger heater to match it. https://www.amazon.com/hygger-Submersible-Aquarium-Controller-Freshwater/dp/B0CJJB54H3?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 So far It's a nice little filter, will it outlive the Carefree Fish filter or will it be the opposite ? Time will tell and ill make sure to edit a follow up! In the end it's more a question of personal taste and which match your color scheme better.

Exactly what I was looking for, perfect for skimming the oil and scum from the surface of the turtle tank. Took less than 10 min to set up and get running

I really liked the surface cleaner aspect of this and used this as a secondary filter in my aquarium. BUT It stopped working in a month. The motor failed.
