The book has sections on Essential Skills which goes over yarn, needles, gauge, casting on, circular knitting, holding the yarn, stranding, weaving, increases and decreases, steeling, correcting mistakes, blocking and finishing, and using color. There is a section of traditional Scandinavian garments such as jackets, sweaters, and mittens from the different countries in the region. There is also a section on using motifs in your knitting. Motifs can be a change in orientation, figurative motifs, or transition motifs. There is next a section on planning your project. Ms. Mucklestone goes over the questions that each knitter should ask themselves before starting a project. These go from the initial measurements to the final design. Most of the book consists of a motif directory with instructions on how to knit each of the photographed motifs in the book. These motifs take up over 100 pages! There are even projects included in this book. There is a pincushion, a pair of traditional mittens, a reindeer hat, and a geometric cowl. At the end of the book there is a section on resources in case you would like to look up further information on the subject of Scandinavian knitting. Overall, this is a very informative and excellent addition to my library. Review: Essential. Informed & Full of Substance - You know when you go on holiday and rent a 4-seater car with a book directory? Well that's what this feels like. It tells you how to go about; where to retrace pattern steps + tips on colour matching, contrast and yarn selection. Tips I never knew necessary are now brought into perspective : much like checking the rear view mirror, or attaching a strategic stitch markers -- akin to blinker light indication. Reads a treat in medium print! Unlike Amy Herzog's disaster of fine print for a beginner sweater instruction book. This is worlds better. Mary never disappoints. Although this issue is more didactic, less vibrant than {FairIsle Style}. One gets excited just hearing her enthusiasm & wealth of knowledge come through a well-organised text. I'm contemplatively wiser about pattern-yarn pairings, much educated on technique and still learning, still going. This book is a smooth, scenic ride ♡ Sheer delight.

So GOOD!
I have lately been obsessively knitting patterned mittens & gloves & hats.. Like seriously obsessively. And I bumped into this book while browsing around, looked interesting, added to cart and here we are. I could not possibly be more pleased w/ my purchase. So much more than patterns & motifs & directions.. the book offers a deep dive into the creative process & plenty of inspiration. There are even a few little projects included. You won't regret buying this book if you're serious about stranded knitting.

Great Catalog of Scandinavian Patterns
Love this book and great reference for the traditional Scandinavian motifs for knitting. Easily transposed to cross-stitching and smocking. Lots of color pictures and diagrams. Highly recommend!

Great graphs
Large assortment of designs, big and small. Lots of ideas for combining patterns as well. I plan to use some of the designs for pattern weaving.

Fair Isle/Scandinavivan Heaven
I usually knit a fair isle scarf during the winter months. And this book brought to me so many designs that I had never seen before anywhere else. The horses and the goats on the one scarf really attracted me. This will be a keeper.

Collection of Scandinavian Motifs Takes Up Where Collection of Fair Isle Motifs Left Off
Mary Jane Mucklestone's 150 SCANDINAVIAN MOTIFS:THE KNITTER'S DIRECTORY does for Scandinavian knitting what her earlier book, 200 Fair Isle Motifs: A Knitter's Directory , did for Fair Isle knitting. The written technical material at the front of the book ("Essential Skills") is much the same, although some topics have been rewritten to reflect the differences between Scandinavian and Fair Isle knitting. Most of the clear, how-to photographs are new, but quite similar because they illustrate many of the same colorwork techniques. Most of the book is given over to a knitter's directory of traditional repeating Scandinavian motifs. The directory starts with a "visual selector" that displays all of the motifs side-by-side. Once you have selected a motif, you then turn to that motif's pages, which show (1) a full-color, actual-size photograph of the knitted-up motif, (2) a black-and-white chart for the motif, (3) a color chart for the motif, and (4) a color-variation chart for the motif. The color-variation chart shows the motif with the dark and light colors reversed (dark motif/light background becomes light motif/dark background). The book's cover photo displays three of the included Scandinavian motif designs. There are four patterns for Scandinavian knitting projects: (1) a blossom pincushion, (2) a pair of traditional mittens, (3) a reindeer hat, and (4) a geometric cowl. The "Essential Skills" chapter covers (1) yarn, (2) needles and other equipment, (3) gauge, (4) casting on, (5) circular knitting, (6) holding the yarn, (7) stranding, (8) weaving, (9) increasing and decreasing, (10) steeking, (11) correcting mistakes, (12) blocking and finishing, (13) using color, (14) traditional garments, (15) using motifs, and (16) planning a project. Each topic is clearly explained using text, drawings, and step-by-step photos. If you enjoy ethnic colorwork knitting, you will definitely want to add this excellent technical reference and stitch dictionary to your knitting book collection! It's a wonderful "quick reference" guide to Scandinavian knitting, and should make a great gift for any intermediate to advanced knitter. To get the most out of this book, a knitter must be able to read charts. (A very good book about learning to read knitting charts is Charts Made Simple: understanding knitting charts visually ).

I am very pleased to have found this book. I have taken a class with the author, while on a knitting cruise, which was delightful. Her designs are beautiful and those included in this book are ultimately ones I will be making for years to come. Believe me, they look great but are very easy to knit, though they look complicated.
