Good, but not where you want to start Hellblazer.
I would say that 'Tainted Love' is an emotional roller coaster for John Constantine, but it's really more of a drop tower. At the start of this collection, John Constantine turns forty years old. He may not have a mid-life crisis, but that's pretty much only because his whole life has been one big crisis already. In the good category, I'd say I like Garth Ennis's run on this series better than Jamie Delano. The artwork is better, and Ennis doesn't feel the need to write out John's thought process when the picture is all that's necessary. For much of the comic, John gets to look like the manipulative bastard Alan Moore envisioned when he created him.On the downside though, Ennis tries to drive most of the drama in this issue through dialogue rather than the supernatural, and he isn't as good as Moore or even Neil Gaiman at writing dialogue. This can make the story drag through the middle, but it does end on quite the high note.If you're looking to start Hellblazer, I'd recommend starting with 'Swamp Thing' first, or with 'Dangerous Habits', but definitely don't start here. You need to care about John's friends to really enjoy this arc, and the set up for them happened in previous issues. Take your time, and you'll enjoy it.

John Constantine, Socially Relevant
Tired old plots and soap opera angst and soul searching for Constantine. A lot of talk talk talk in lots of panels panels panels. But, socially relevant!

Dark
This one is really dark. And sad. John goes to the lowest point of his life and somehow, somehow claws back.

Constantine
My favorite of the hellblazer volumes. The Ennis run is really good as a whole except for volume 8 was a little underwhelming in my opinion.

Prime Hellblazer
It was the golden age of Vertigo; Hellblazer and The Sandman we’re making me look at comics which I’d loved since a kid, in a totally different way. This was just plain GREAT storytelling.

Best Comic Series Ever
Before reading Tainted Love, i read the previous 6 volumes of Hellblazer and i thoroughly reccommend you do the same as it's well worth it.I think Hellblazer is the first time i have gotten so emotionally attached to characters in a comic. When Kit leaves John i had to put the comic down and come to terms with the move. John has been through nothing but misery his whole life, some of it his fault, some of it not, and to see the brilliantly written Kit Ryan (Miss Ireland indeed!) leave John was something that shocked me.Garth Ennis has the amazing ability to avoid the traps in his dialogue. The break up feels real as does the Belfast pub conversation towards the end. It flows beautifully, like he sat in the pub and just wrote down what was said and published that. Kit hasn't got any dark past or mysterious powers or fantastic stuff. She's just an ordinary brilliant stupid clever human being. Thank you Garth Ennis for writing your characters with such honesty. I cannot wait to see how Kit's story ends in Volume 8.As for Constantine himself, he remains consistently great, never remaining in one place or with the same people bar Chas. I reckon there'll be about 30 TBP's worth of Hellblazer if they keep reprinting them the way they are through to the end. So long as the writing stays this sharp and stories remain this human, i'll be in for a treat. If you give Hellblazer a miss, you will be missing one of the greatest comics ever written. It's even better than Snadman. It's that good. Roll on Volume 8.

Boring on the beginning. Action starts in the middle. Drawings same as in PREACHER.
