When you are riding, can you toggle off the touch screen?

There is a screen lock function on the side button that allows you to see the display and not be able to use the touchscreen. I use it when I’m sweating and standing on the pedals. You can simply deactivate the lock by pressing the side button again

How is the 1040 for mountain bike navigation?

I use it 80% fr road cycling, but it has been solid for mountain biking as well. Download the trailforks app from the Connect IQ store and that will give you MTB-specific maps. The biggest advantage I have found with the 1040 over older Garmin Edge units is the multiband GPS -- this is really useful for MTB rides where the singletrack can be dense and winding - multiband does a much better job at positioning and keeping up. I also find that the big screen on this one is helpful for MTB since I'm making quicker and kore frequent glances at it than I do on a road ride. So, my answer to your question is "yes".

Why is this so expensive?

Quality costs money. I bought the 530 a year ago to save money, but it lacked features that I wanted, so I bought the 1040. “It always costs less to go first class.”

Easy to use

This is the first bike computer I've owned . To me it's a great purchase. On one screen I can see everything that I need. It will download info to other devices like strava. I highly recommend.

Works great. I can see the display even in the bright sun, wearing sunglasses. The GPS is on point, the battery runs for several rides. I am very happy I opted for 1040 and not 1030 model.

Still excellent — maybe even better for long rides

The Garmin Edge 1040 may not have the ultra-bright, glossy screen of the 1050, but don’t let that fool you — functionally, it does almost everything the 1050 does, and for less money.What it lacks: a brighter screen, a built-in speaker (do you really need a bike bell sound?), and Garmin Pay (which I’ve never used on a bike ride anyway).What it gains: incredible battery life. If you’re doing multi-day tours or long adventures, the 1040 might actually be the better choice. It just keeps going.Yes, the 1050 looks more modern. But if you care more about performance than flash, and you don’t need it to double as a mini tablet, the 1040 is a smart buy.
