SLAM! Vol. 1

3.5 stars, Personally, I had a hard time getting into this one because as I have found out, I really just don’t care that much about roller derby, which for me makes this graphic novel an unfortunate match! However, what I could most definitely appreciate was the fantastic art work and storytelling. I love the strong women characters, and I love that they are slowly building the backstory for the side characters. It also feels like this is going to be a slow burn romance friends to enemies to lovers situation, which I am almost always into, but I probably won’t be picking up the second.

The story is great, the printing is beautiful and the art style is great. If you're into roller derby or thinking about the sport or you just like graphic novels, i can not recommend this one enough!

Absolutely loved it, and I have never played Roller Derby!

Total fun - like the comedy/drama "Glow" on Netflix, about a short-lived 1980's women's pro-wrestling TV series, as a comic book. The characterization drives the piece; you will like these girls. The new, seldom-scene arena, roller-derbie, makes it immediately interesting, and the series is drawn well.

I was a derby player for years, and I feel like I’m reading my life. Must read for anyone in the derby community or anyone curious about it.

Love the art, it's gorgeous in every way. Story is also good but an easy read. Good summer read. A+

Awesome art work, love the detailed backgrounds. And a great story about friendship and a sport that unfortunately, rarely gets write about. Highly recommend!

The artwork is wonderful! Bright and bold, and it really captures the different characters personalities.The story is strong and interesting, with good dialogue. The characters feel realistic, they are well fleshed out with distinct personalities that show through in the way they speak and act. But for me, the story just moved a little bit too fast. A lot of things were skipped over that would have made me feel more involved. I wanted to see more of the training, and things like one of the characters first date with a new man - he just appears once and then suddenly she really likes him. I wanted to understand why!So really my complaint is that I want more!I recommend to anyone that likes roller derby, stories about women in sport, or stories about friendships between women.

Great characters. Fab art. I know nothing about roller derby but this entertained me muchly. High recommend and can't wait for the next trade.

Estupendo cómic. Llegó a tiempo para un regalo. Sería genial una edición en Castellano. Recomiendo a los que no conocen el Deporte así como a las que ya lo practicamos, te ves identificada.

I bought two copies of this book, one for myself and one for my daughter (a junior derby girl). We both loved it. The artwork is beautiful and the story is great and relatable, if only a bit light in plot depth. Can't wait for volume 2!
