General Tools MMH800 Pin/Pinless Moisture Meter w/Temp and Humidity

I'm a general contractor and I find myself occasionally having to test for moisture in a client's home. This is my second General Tool moisture meter. This model - the MMH800 - has more functions then my previous one including the ability to test for moisture as well as providing a temperature readout. The meter is a dual-function pin and pin-less model which allows testing without leaving holes in walls or woodwork. I had the opportunity to be on a customer site with a mold remediation tech who was taking moisture readings to determine possible wet areas that might have been contributing to a mold issue. The tech didn't tell me the model he was using other than it was a professional -series, scan-only type and that it was very accurate with a good scan depth. When I compared my readings from the MMH800 with the tech's meter I found very little differences in the readings. There is one inherent limiting factor with all pin meters and that is they only test to the depth of the pins, useful on drywall or wood but very limited on masonry and/or concrete. Concrete testing is virtually unreliable due to the penetration issue. The ability to take a scan reading alleviates some of that issue. What I like most about the MMH800 is that is reasonably accurate and affordable. Adding a moisture meter (along with a good gas sniffer) to my tool bag provides data which ultimately allows me to better serve my customers.

I found this to be a very useful tool. I have not used it a lot but compared to a moisture meeter I already own it seems to be quite accurate. The temp and humidity gage is very useful to me. Going in to a home to diagnose moisture problems I need the temp and humidity in the house. The down side is it seems to take some time to acclimate the gage to the inside conditions. I wanted a non invasive meeter to check and not damage flooring and other surfaces. It seems to work OK but not as well as well with the pins. So it may take a little getting used to. Over all for the money I believe this is a good meeter.

Save your money. I'd had some cheaper moisture meters I wasn't happy with, so I decided to buy something a little more expensive. In my experience, General Tools has a pretty middle-of-the-road reputation, but this $100 model seemed like a good compromise between a cheapie and one of the high-dollar models. For a while I thought I'd made a good decision, but after about three months (using it two or three times a week) it started giving me weird readings. Shortly after that, it just started telling me everything I tested had 0% moisture. Changing batteries didn't help. For some reason, I decided to give them a second chance, and I bought another. My bad. It did the exact same thing, except this time it only took a month or so to get to the 0% readings. Now I have to decide if I'm going to try some other mid-range brand or spend some real money.

This is a solid performing meter a step above the baseline meters plus it has a built-in display for temperature and humidity which is handy especially when measure moisture in attics and crawlspaces.

I've now used this tool many times. It appears to be very accurate. It's very easy to use. I like the ability to calibrate the tool before using it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a similar tool. I would buy this again.

Not near as accurate as I expected it to be. The temp and humidity readings are very slow to respond. Seller was great product is only so so.

Great out of the box on the job tool for flood claims in Houston and Beaumont, Tx. Scoped 7 Churches and substantiated their moisture condition, Display allowed all parties to identify and quantify conditions for the records in the flood claims. Only problem I have had is it gathered legs and disappeared... Have to replace it.

Amateur meter not for professional use, I used this next to a MMS2 and it offered differing readings, this machine is OK for occasional domestic use but not for a professional.

I was having a problem with moisture in a couple of basement apartments so I wanted to determine the source of the moisture. This tool appears to work very well for this application.
