Okinawa Travel Map First Edition (Periplus Travel Maps)

Great reference

It's all right, but don't purchase with the book "Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands" because when you purchase thatbook you get this identical map for free, so you're actually wasting your money. Otherwise, if you don't purchasethat book which is excellent, this is an excellent map and probably one of its kind. It has the readings of Okinawanplace name Kanji that even the Japanese can't read because many times, Okinawan names are not the same as Japanese names.

This is not a very good map if you want detail roads for the whole island, The middle part (Okinawa City) is missing. They put Kagoshima on it, but that is not even part of Okinawa. That is mainland Japan.

This is an excellent map - and it's a little larger than the one that comes with the Okinawa & the Ryukyu Islands book. It's the only map (in English) that includes all the little Ryukyu Islands. I can't understand the other complaints. The Periplus full sized map of Japan is excellent too.

Maps are hard to use and not easy to carry around and find locations

This seems to be the only presently available map of Okinawa in English, although long ago I found another that more clearly marked the American bases and in my memory was more detailed. As far as it goes, it's OK, but one could do with a larger scale version of more of the island than just Naha. The roads are often small and confusing, and this gives rather a broad-brush version.

Yes, sadly, as someone else pointed out, the middle part of the main island is missing. Why???
