Great hand plane
This was the first Japanese hand plane that I’ve purchased. It is everything I expected and more. The instructions for setting the blade and chip breaker are well written and easy to follow. The blade is sharp and read to got as soon as you get it. Follow the instructions nd you will be pealing off supper thin shavings in no time. I will deffently be getting additional planes for other functions.

Blades have big enough waves to surf.
I knew what I was getting into with this as I had watched setup videos before the purchase. Everything is fine and in good shape. Expect the irons. The chip breaker has a high spot in the middle of the blade back near the edge that is about 1/8 high and the cutting iron has both high and low spots on the edge that is off by an easy 1/16 front and back. I gave up on using my water stones and moved over to my diamond stones for flattening and have already spent about 8 hours on it and have yet to get them flat. At this point it's good enough even though it not really flat in any sense of the word. I have yet to get the chip breaker and iron to sit on each other with out light showing through. Yes I am feeling a bit frustrated. While this is my first Japanese plane I have lots of experience with setting up European planes and chisels both wood working chisels and carving gouges. So while not an expert I am pretty good at flattening blade backs. With all that said it does cut pretty good and leaves a nice finish but it constantly jams and needs to cleared out. Wood bits get stuck between the chipbreaker and iron. I use a bamboo skewer the kind you get at the supermarket for shish kebabs. Clearly I have to learn how to use it properly.

I'm never using a push plane again.
I'm a Scoutmaster. Every year I turn 11 year olds loose with a $90 piece of western red cedar to make Greenland kayak paddles. Some of them are quater sawn boards that cut pretty easily. Some, like the one pictured, are not. This year I bought three of the Japanese pull planes. They worked so much better on all paddles.! They are easier to adjust, they are lighter and easier to handle. The cut angle is set and just works. We also had plenty of traditional push planes. Our adults, accomplished wood workers, spent so much time adjusting planes it was ridiculous when compared to the ease of use of the pull planes. My push planes are now simply on display. The tools I will use are these pull planes.

I’m beginning to forget my other smoothing planes.
Absolutely beautiful plane. Didn’t have to sharpen, and was ready to use, right out of packaging. Just need to properly adjust depth, and it’s ready to go.I’ll sharpen after a few days of use, so I can see the difference in what it truly is capable of.As usual of Kakuri products, build quality is excellent!

Very nice.
This thing is killer. I use it to shave down small chunks of wood to a size where I can widdle it into a chop stick. This thing shaves all kinds of woods very easily. Including pieces of skateboards. I will cut skateboards up and this thing took layers off no issue. The only problem I have with it is adjusting the blade. I haven’t figured out that technique yet but that’s probably user error.
