Damar varnish is still the best for a true, even gloss protection on oil paintings.
Unlike the newer sythetic (alkyd) varnishes, Damar is still my preferred varnish for a slighly viscous, high gloss finish that sets up quickly and has a very even coating. Yes, Damar will slighly turn a hint of brown given enough time, but its an even tone that can barely be seen in the whites, and even, for some, enhances the painting. I tried using some of the more modern solutions and they tend to go on in a patchy manner, sometimes resisting the painted surface, which requires 2-3 coats to cover. Damar is high-gloss in one pass and because it sinks in better, it gives a richer appearance, the colors look cleaner and the darks look deeper.Winsor and Newton always make excellent products, although a little pricier, its worth it.

Very distinct smell
Cons- Not sure if I want to buy this again. I had a real bad headache after opening this bottle and also it takes a lot of varnish just to cover one average canvas. It took good three days to dry. You cannot use this varnish inside your house. I have used many other brands but this one I wish I didn’t buy. Pros- Yes it has a nice look after drying.

Varnish
Good varnish for oils but must apply very thin layer to dry. Applied too thick on a painting and took month to dry.
