Works best if you have read the previous books Hugh was in
This was a great book on a side character, suddenly making Hugh a real person you could care about, not just a bad guy working for the villain. I don't think it would be as good a read (and it really is) if you haven't read the other books in the Kate Daniels series that give him his history. It also seems to be a setup for the final novel in the KD series. These are not the usual characters I find in most of these kinds of books, but I can't discuss what is so interesting without taking away the plotline. It is the characterization, all the little actions both rash, heroic, stupid, and just plain funny, that make the Ilona Andrews team written novels so involving to read.Considering I have had 2 other books this month where I forced myself to get through about 1/3 of the book before I let myself discard it - you keep hoping it will get better, and interesting - I found this one so good I have read it twice And I look forward to the audio version being released. My experience with these novels has been that the narrators are so good with their voices and characterizations that I get a whole new look at these novels. The audio plug in my car feeds it into my speakers, and it is now my favorite way to drive long, highway distances.

Can you redeem a warlord?
What started as an April Fool’s joke turned into a Trilogy based on that warlord we all love to hate. Can Hugh find redemption, does he deserve it, can’t he be all that bad if his Iron Dogs love him so much?More time spent in Kate Daniels world is ok by me. Ilona Andrews once again delivers a book that exceeds expectations and doesn’t let the reader down. This dynamic writing duo never miss a step, read anything by them and be blown away. The book was a great setup for the last Kate book and I cannot wait to read the detente that is coming. As always the introduction of new characters leaves you wanting more. I want more Lamar and Bale bickering and Bucky doing whatever he does. In the next one we will hopefully find out Elara’s secrets, we already knew most of Hugh’s.

Another Great Story from Ilona and Gordon Andrews.
Like many other reviewers, I didn't think the authors could change the way I felt about Hugh, which was not good based on his actions in the Kate Daniels series. And yet, they did it without changing his personality or by making him less than he is as a person. Instead, they did it through subtle shifts, and through Hugh's interactions with others. I really loved this book and I just love their wonderful imaginations and how beautifully they tell a story. I also really like Elara and the Departed. I am looking forward to getting to know them all a little better. Ilona and Gordon are at the top of my favorite author's list. I can't wait for the next book in the saga, and will be pre-ordering it as soon as it appears on my Amazon Page.
