An imaginative recreation of a life well lived
Angela Blondeau imaginatively recreates the atmosphere in life in pre war Vienna as Mathias Rigan earns his living with his fortune telling monkey and cares for his little son Otto. Soon enough six year old Otto must leave his loving father, and sails alone for America to join his mother, who proves to be cold and withholding. Otto must have been a winsome child because he finds many adult mentors who give him the loving support he craves, though he grieves for his father all his life.Military people and their spouses will enjoy the account of Otto's eventual successful flying career, while his strong and competent wife copes with moving every few months and making a home for their six children. It wouldn't be fair to the reader to tell any more of their lives in this review, but Otto today is 97 and a testament to how immigration has enriched our country.
