How do these compare to the old Craftsman utility blade snips? Can it cut a ¼" shim as easily as them?

Yes it cuts 1/4" shim. It cuts 3/8's shima too. They are identical in every way. The same exact tool just with a different name on it. I'm a union glazier. Me and all my guys have gone to these cutters. Just as good as Craftsman's

How wide does the mouth open? 3/4 of an inch?

Actually....it fully opens up to about 1.5"....when the pliers are fully open
