Stainless steel soil thermometer to determine soil temperature to plant dahlias.
We wanted to plant some dahlias at our new home in the central Appalachian mountains about 2000 feet higher than the old place. My wife and I are both retired geologists, and so take a scientific approach to most problems. Dahlias are expensive and should only be planted in soil above 60 degrees. I made a small test hole, near where the dahlias go, plugged and marked with an old 2 lumen walk light. Every few days I take the soil thermometer and measure the temperature at the bottom of the hole. When the temperature averages above 60 with a lower limit of 60 the dahlias come out of the vegetable crisper and get planted near the test hole. In the fall we will dig up the bulbs and use the same technique next year. This is a proper method of determining soil temperature and this thermometer is well suited.

Helps make up for what I lack in Garden Smarts
This year, for the first time, I'm trying to grow ginger in my less than tropical climate. The rhizomes are supposed to start putting out buds at up to 12 weeks after they're planted indoors in 80 degree soil. OK... that's a long time to sit and wonder if my investment is paying off, or if the temperature fluctuations in my house are making the ginger rot. I've got them on a heating mat (as directed) but since I couldn't live with the house at 80 degrees, I had t be able to keep track of the soil temp. This thermometer seems to be accurate enough, though I haven't tested it scientifically. It's definitely easy to read. And it has worked both indoors (with the ginger) and outdoors (where I'm anxiously awaiting warm enough soil to tuck in the heirloom tomatoes I started from seed. I especially like the colored band that indicates the ideal planting temperature range for a home garden.

SS Soil Thermometer
This SS Soil Thermometer is super easy to use and I have used it for the new grass we sowed, a ficus we potted and arborvitae we planted. Highly recommend.

CALIBRATE - HOW TO
The thermometer will not work correctly unless it is calibrated. 1. Place it in a glass of ice water. 2. Let it sit until the needle has stabilized on the face of the thermometer. 3. Adjust the needle till it reads 32°F by turning the nut on the stem that is just under the face, Adjusting the needle is just like adjusting the time on an analog watch. Once the thermometer is calibrated, it works pretty well.

Very nice!
I should've bought one of these things years ago. It'll take the guesswork out of applying product(s) to the lawn at the right time. I like that it came with a case & pocket clip. I look forward to using it this fall.

Perfect winner
I bought this one and another from Interdynamics. Both came fast and were calibrated great. I prefer this one because it’s easier to read at a quick glance. Great for verifying a/c after recharging system

Don’t forget to calibrate it!
Works as expected but you need to make sure they are calibrated correctly. Just like in the food industry, place the thermometer in a cup of ice water, and once the needle stops moving, use a wrench on the back to adjust the needle to exactly 32F while keeping the thermometer in the ice water.

A Must Have For The Garden
With an up and down Spring like we are having the air temps on any given day give no clues as to the actual soil temperature. But this easy to use soil thermometer takes all the guess work out and allow you to plant with confidence. It appears well built, is easy to read, and is decidedly accurate. Everything you could want at a very reasonable price. On top of that this company wastes no time in responding to orders. Ours showed up so fast I couldn't believe it !

Works as per the description

Works as described. Just would have like a Celsius scale instead of Fahrenheit, but it will do.

Used this for our Christmas turkey, and it worked perfectly, allowing the temperature readings to be taken to ensure the turkey was cooked all the way through. It was, so this thermometer worked well.
