Classy little movie.
The three lead actors/characters did great job. I loved the City Island setting.

It's pertinent sure. I am attached to Garcia in a very Scorsese, whatever Clint Eastwood does manner. Garcia is my film broker; this movie helped me to figure that out. I am tired and bored with/of movies recently; I'm a hardcore cinephile - this one made absolute sense and brought me back, rat a tat and no filler. Don't do Part II - unless of course you do. Bring me the head of Andy Garcia. Any time, any place. It's not possible to move past him, he is an auteur and his commitment to his music and that respect for his heroes is rather obvious. Viva la Tito. This movie was a gas. Everyone likes it. I checked. I truly respect this man's music. What he loaned us. Thank You very much. Blessings to your family. I thought Olivia, did an excellent job. I mean that sincerely. That stripper thing...went down well if you ask me. If you ever speak with Francis, please tell him that I thought Sophia was sexy, and unique and gave the role a natural feel and I'm glad she got the part and not Wyn. It was more thoughtful for us. She was so elegant. That costume designer should have received an Oscar, oh my gosh that palette. Oh my God. And do ask Sophia, how did she managed all the Sherry Netherland wherewithal. Still on my mind. My goal was to be a film editor, but that was then. I paint; I design, I have a large umbrella, but each time I see your works I go to further places. Thank you. I very much like that you received that role. It made the entire movie more believable and sensitive. And you looked good. The full circle was nice too.

The best dysfunctional family movie since "Little Miss Sunshine."
It sounds glib to call Raymond De Felitta's "City Island" this year's "Little Miss Sunshine," yet the comparison is apt. Both films depict dysfunctional families nearing collapse, and both are blessed with razor-sharp screenplays and ensemble casts that are wonderfully, hilariously perfect. Each member of the cast (especially top-billed Andy Garcia) gives an Oscar-worthy performance, and all will be robbed if they don't win the Screen Actors Guild Best Ensemble Cast Award next year. The eponymous "City Island" is a small community just off the shoreline of the Bronx, officially part of that borough but with a small-town charm all its own. As Molly Charlesworth (Emily Mortimer), one of the film's characters, declares, "It's a cross between New England and Washington Heights!" Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia) is a "clamdigger" (a lifelong resident of City Island), as opposed to a "mussel-sucker" (someone who moves to City Island, or one of those very rare natives who moves away). Vince works as a prison guard (though he prefers the term "corrections officer"), but that job doesn't seem to satisfy him these days. His wife Joyce (Julianna Margulies), daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) and son Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller) wonder why Vince has a "poker game" almost every night, and also why he's brought paroled convict Tony Nardella (Steven Strait) home to live with them. The other Rizzos, meanwhile, are harboring secrets of their own...To reveal any more of the plot would be sabotage. Let's just say the bickering of the Rizzo family reaches critical mass, with catharsis to follow. In any case, you fall in love with all the characters, and although you might be a little leery of some of the things they do, you'd still be happy to have them all over for your Sunday barbeque. "City Island" is a funny, charming, touching must-see.

A great comedy, and so much more
I didn't have very high expectations for this movie, but it totally surprised me. Most movies about dysfunctional families completely bore me, because the characters are usually as pathetic in the end as they are in the beginning. Not so here. All of them have secrets which they think are so terrible, they hide them from each other; while bickering with and attacking each other, afraid they will be found out, and rejected. The plot keeps thickening as their secrets grow, until in one hilarious final scene the truth all comes out. And in the end, they all realize that the secret each has been hiding is found to be so insignificant and forgivable by everyone else, that they come to see how much they all love one another. I know... this may sound a little like too much of a feel good movie, but it all unfolds so amazingly naturally, it's definitely not what I'd call one of those soppy movies. This movie turned out to be one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time, because the humor is not forced or contrived. As Shakespeare said, "comedy is tragedy", and there was a lot to laugh at here. And yet, when you can laugh at something you thought was so tragic, it stops being so tragic. I'll just say that after watching this movie, I went to bed with a big smile on my face.

great ensemble cast
I really liked this movie. Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies are favorites of mine and are both wonderful in this movie. I loved the loud "Italian" family and how they solved their misunderstandings. I was happy to see Alan Arkin in this also. He was always wonderful in everything he did. He is missed.

Movie or reality show, you decide...
This is one of those well-made movies that sucks you in and you get lost in the story all the way until the end. God blesses you with talents and the way you give God thanks is by using these talents in service to others. With this being said! Thank you to all who were involved in making this great movie and have the courage to finds your God-given purpose in life. When this spiritual moment happens, it enriches everyone's life including our creator...

Beautiful cast
The script is feel good and relatable. The casting is well done creating a believable dynamic of tension and warmth between the characters. Great reminder that one cannot run from their truths or their past because they run with us until that day we decide to let them in.

Good storyline; HORRIBLE accents
Great script, but I'm from NY and the actors' accents are just way off. They sound like a forced mix between Philly and Boston, and almost ruin the movie. Nothing like Italian-Americans from the Bronx. Are accent coaches so expensive to hire?

Watch it, you'll laugh out loud
An hilarious and well acted film which should appeal to anyone who appreciates quirky characters, humorous family life and a good storyline. I've bought copies for two friends so far and they both loved it too. It's a shame it isn't better known really, as people are missing out.

Fantastic!
This is one of my favourite movies! It's hilarious and very quirky - so refreshing compared to the other manufactured comedies that are churned out each year. I rave about it to all my friends and family.

Love this film.
Bought this on DVD after seeing it on Sky by chance, had never heard of it. Not a big budget film, came out as an independent. Such a funny yet unassuming film. Fantastic acting. Can easily watch it over and over. Not much of a film review I'm afraid, all I can say is I highly recommend it.
