The single most helpful book for anyone with phobias/anxiety
If you or someone you know suffers from a panic disorder, anxiety, OCD, or phobias (especially agoraphobia and social phobias), you must read this book. It is THE best source of information and practical help I have ever seen on the subject.The book contains a wide array of topics: causes of anxiety, coping with attacks, pharmaceutical treatments, holistic treatments, psychological approaches, nutrition, relaxation, where to find support, how to give support... the book would be worth triple its price just for the richness of information Dr. Bourne has compiled.Add to that the excellent workbook exercises and techniques, and you have a truly indispensable resource.I was very pleased with the presentation of the material. This book is not overflowing with warm and fuzzy, touchy-feely reassurances like many "self-help" books. Instead, it has proven, practical, self-paced techniques and exercises which you can use in your daily life, presented in a clear and easy-to-digest format. It's not a dry textbook, and it's not a bit of pop-psychology fluff -- this is a powerful tool for anyone whose quality of life has diminished because of anxiety and fear.Good luck!

Older edition is terrific! No need to get newer edition
Any edition of this book is worth it. I purchased this older edition not only for the reduced price, but also because a professional who uses this has reviewed the later versions/editions, and the basic information is the same. I recommend this book because it contains information that is right on target. Get an older copy like this one instead of the brand new version--you'll be glad you did!

Only one tiny complaint, but first...
Let me just say that this book is amazing! Even though its last publication was in 2000 the authors seem to really speak to those who have anxiety. The questions I ask myself as I read are usually answered in the next few pages, and some of the insights really seem like the authors understand what is going on. My only complaint is that I wish there were a better way to organize the exercises in the book, as I do not like to keep multiple copies of anxiety-filled escapades around the house. I wish there were a way to work through the book rather than skipping sections and coming back as needed. Otherwise I truly recommend this book to those suffering with anxiety of any kind, especially social. It really makes you feel like SOMEONE understands, and gives you ways out of it.

It can really help!
I recently developed a phobia to driving on highways, one in particular. It was really bothersome and disruptive and I was angry and confused because of my reaction every time I tried to go somewhere on that route. I felt like I might "pass out" or otherwise lose control as a result of my panic reaction. The first thing this book made clear to me was that it is physiologically impossible for your body to "pass out" or otherwise lose control during a panic attack. Your blood pressure is too high to do so, and the actual emotional state is truely one of control, not the opposite, to do so. You are not going to pass out or otherwise lose control of the situation. When you feel out of control in a panic attack, you are actually in a state of high control. You must realize that and remind yourself of that fact. I used a method they mentioned, putting a rubber band on my left wrist when driving that route, and smacking myself with it whenever I felt overwhelmed. It worked. The first time I took that drive, I had 5-6 rubberband whelts on my left arm, but I drove it, I got to my destination and the panic issue was gone. I now drive that highway on a regular basis. Even if you don't do all of the exerercises in the book, you will experience results and resolution. It's worth it!

It was packed nicely and got here safely.That said: I'm very disappointed. I brought why I thought was a NEW copy of this book . And paid a NEW copy price. The pages are clean and not written in but it clearly looks like it's been around awhile was was pre owned. I don't have a problem with that had it been listed as PRE OWNED and not NEW. And I hadn't paid the price of a NEW book.I won't be sending it back cause I need it for therapy.

I can breathe again!
I read this book several times! I was amazed at how the breathing techniques and muscle relaxation exercises, done several times a day...greatly improved my anxiety issues. Who knew that most of us do not know how to breathe correctly, from the abdomen, and accelerate our anxiety from breathing incorrectly? The explanations as to why we suffer for anxiety and panic attacks, helped to reinforce that there are real reasons why we arrive at this state.Understanding the reasons and help with it vastly improved my daily situation.A must read for those that spend each day worrying about when the next attack may happen....

how bad can you get...
This was a HUGE disappointment; it was NOT a workbook but a hardcover college-type textbook. Difficult to use exercises and not easy for my clients to read eiter. VERY disappointed. TOO much trouble to send back. They got me on this one....
