a jewel of a book and an experience to read over and over
A truly moving and game changing book for me. It opened up a way of life and exploring in our western landscapes that has stayed with me for decades. It captures the joy and awe and moment in time when a new way of experiencing life comes through a new landscape--or at least new eyes.

The book is so interesting that it's almost painful to see it end. It is one of those books you'll keep to re-read each year and still take away something new. Found a reference to it in another book and can't figure out how I missed it for so long. Maybe it was waiting for me to get to a place where I could appreciate it to the fullest.

Combine a little kerouc, dee brown, s.c.gwynne, hampton sides, jim harrison, john mcphee... you get the idea... superlatives apply in all regards to this fine book. I have given it as a gift to six or seven friends. They all love it. I re-read it annually and have done so for about twenty years. Sentimental, historical, autobiographical, nostalgic, prophetic...
