Exellent text for learning about typography beyond the basics
This is a fantastic book that teaches advanced typographic technique and refinement. There are plenty of excellent introductory typography books, and several great expert type references, but Typography Essentials is great for those who already know the basics and want to learn more. Advanced students or professional designers who want to expand and refine their typographic sensibilities would benefit greatly from this text. Ina Saltz teaches this sensibility via lots of contemporary design examples; clearly organized and beautifully presented. The book could function as a linear text, but it is organized by design concept and can be accessed more randomly as needed. In other words, it would be a great inspiration book around the design studio.

Great Book - Handling Issues
I'm incredibly happy with the book - I recommend it to anyone interested in type or graphic design.I'm just disappointed because the book I ordered looks as though it was stepped on at some point..Some of the later pages have crumpled-up marks in the corners. Mostly happy, just a little disappointedas far as that goes.

Truly... an Essential Design Guide
Ina Saltz has created one the best graphic design books to appear in many years. As the former Creative Director of Sports Illustrated magazine, I know first hand the challenges of using typography to express ideas with beauty and clarity. Typography Essentials breaks down the process of working with type into unique categories that elucidate the process for the designer. I will continue to look at, and to read, this book for inspiration. Any student or professional would do well to keep this book nearby.

A great typography resource
This is not really a book to sit down and read. It's a great resource on principles of design concerning typography. It's not based on trends, but on classic design principles. Great for anyone studying design or just your average font geek.

Not quite what I thought
It is very pretty and has great examples. Each principle is one page with a blurb and an example, I thought there would be more content, more text book like. Definitely an accessory book, not a main study book.
