Fantastic
This book is fantastic! That being said this book is not a beginners whittling book, it is for anyone interested in learning about whittling and plans for fairly complex projects. The book is a fantastic read. It was written in 1930 and the author is what would be described as a "man's man". He speaks of how it is a shame for any not not to desire to carry a knife, the "normal" boy who has used a knife. It is a breath of fresh air in our gender neutral times. At one point he speaks of stropping the blade to a fine edge using the palm of your hand, at a time when men used their hands and had callous to do so. He mentions testing the blades edge by running the edge vertically down your thumbnail. What a fantastic read!I haven't read every word of the book yet. I was thinking through some of the projects but as this author is such a fantastic writer I am going to go back and read the project details to find other gems of wisdom I am sure are oresent. So, if you know basic whittling like the different cuts, or just look them up online or in youtube, and have used a pocket knife, this book will give you some fantastic projects. If you are a beginner you will want to learn basic cuts and how to properly handle a knife before you can do these projects sucessfulky. This book was written when all men had a knife in their pocket and every boy had whittled a branch of two and assumes you know how to properly use a knife. If you want an interesting look at a man who was a boy in the 1910-1915 time period this is a good read. All in all a very good book!

A unique artform is whittling. Your grand father probably carved the things shown in this book.
Bring back a dying art form. Whittling or carving. Give me a stick or a discarded piece of wood and a pocket knife and I will whittle you a unique piece of art. This book starts the creative juices flowing helping you see a piece of discarded wood differently. What can your imagination and pocket knife create. Whittling builds hand eye coordination and allows an individual a way of expressing oneself. My wife takes all of my creations from a pair of pliers carved from a single piece of wood to a dog, girraffe, penguin or whatnots. This book will help you unlock you creativity with a carving knife. Note: buy a thumb guard to protect your thumb while whittling

Not for a complete novice.
As a literal novice at woodcarving (sheltered childhood?) I expected a little on technique but this book is written on the assumption that 'every boy' whittles sticks. This is probably a sign of being written by an american in 1930. There are vague guides on knives and sharpening. The instructions and pictures are minimal which I don't mind too much but if u want a step by step guide, you won't find it here. If you want an easy read and a few project ideas this is for you.

Hard to follow
Can not fault the delivery or the book, I did find it hard to follow some of the work in side not the best book for beginner, a better book would be (the little book of whittling )or (whittling twigs & branches ) I have from Amazon and recommend them both.
