Don't Reject This Book Because of Its Title!
An all-time favorite children's classic! Teaches so clearly that we will never be happy trying to be something or someone we were never created to be. The language is SO appealing to children, and I must say, to adults as well. I read this book to our sons countless times and recently bought it for the son of a dear friend. It probably would appeal more to boys as it is about a lion and his adventures with hunters, but again, the language is so engaging that I think girls would enjoy it as well! It is a fairly lengthy book, at least in terms of a bedtime story, but certainly may be read in one sitting if desired. I would estimate it would appeal to children six years of age and older. I re-read it from time to time myself, and I am 70!

Childhood book
I use to check this book out from the library multiple times when I was a child. So I had to have it after almost 50 years!!

The story that made me love reading
When I was in the third grade, I had not yet become a reader. In fact, I disliked reading enough to concern my mother, a former English teacher and a great reader. Then, one afternoon, Mom called me upstairs from my nap to show me something special. It was Lafcadio. After reading about this magical lion, I fell in love with reading and, from then on, always had my nose in a book. Years later, having become an English teacher myself, I searched for this book so I could share my story with my students through a literacy narrative. Though I did not remember the book's name or author, it took no time at all to find it. I simply wrote in the search bar, "the Lion who ate marshmallows," and there it was. What a delight it was to read the story again so many years later. Mr. Silverstein was masterful in his humor and imagination. Thank you, Sir, for gifting the world with your story!

highly recommend this book ages 3 & up.
I love the book. But bc it has the huge aspect of the guns or shooting I was prohibited from finishing reading the book to my pre-K class. I was disappointed as were they since itβs a truly beautiful story w great life lessons. I still highly recommend this book ages 3 & up.

Fun Read and Great Read Aloud Book
This was one of my favorite Shel Silverstein books as a child - who doesn't love a lion who eats marshmallows. I decided to buy it for my nephew who loves toy soldiers/guns/etc. because I thought he might like the premise of a lion who learns to shoot a gun. He LOVES the book. My sister-in-law reads it to him every single night. One thing to keep in mind while the book is funny and very enjoyable, it is not the most gentle topic. Lafcadio is a lion who eats people (and marshmallows) and becomes an expert marksman. It is not a scary book, but I know some individuals might be offended or concerned, so I thought it best to mention.

if you're 50+, you might've missed this one...
this was bought as a gift for a friend's recent baby shower; the idea being in lieu of cards, folks might bring their own, favorite, childhood book (i thought the idea was thoroughly groovy). the year this book was published, 1963, made it easy to choose - notwithstanding the fact that it's a typically, predictably wonderful, Silverstein offering from "back in the day".if you're a half-century or so on in years, you might've even missed this one too (or had forgotten about it by now). our friend was tickled pink about this since she'd never heard of it (she's a late 20-something gal)! it'll be a hit for her new baby - after all, what Shel Silverstein book isn't? highly recommended...

I'm a great loved of Shel Silverstein
I'm a great loved of Shel Silverstein. I had never heard of this book but saw it on Amazon after looking at other Silverstein books. It's about a Lion who moves to the city as the worlds greatest shot and has a great love for marshmallows. I decided to buy it for a 5th birthday present for a boy who loves marshmallows. It's a chapter book but great for a young child. Enjoyable to the adult who reads it aloud as well.

My daughter loves it
My daughter used to come home from grade one and two almost every library day with this book. She is now 17 and I bought it for her birthday, she was elated!
