The Cat Who Turned On and Off

Lilian Jackson Braun is ALWAYS a good read
One of her earlier writings, but such a good story line & mystery! As with all of her books the evolution of Qwill & his life status is fun to read. I suggest starting at the very first book and going in order to capture the brilliance of her writings.

Third in the Cat Who series
This cozy mystery really held my interest. People died who I thought were important to the story. The author plays fair with the reader for the revelation of the murderer, but I didn't catch it until the end. While it is the third in a series, it can be read out of order.I enjoyed it and will continue on in the series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with cats, this series should be on your "to read" list.

Book is great. Recordings not so great for high price.
I ordered a number of "The Cat Who..." CDs, the ones that are unavailable elsewhere. Two of the books had discs that were so full of static that they were unintelligible and had to be returned. This was one of the ones that I had to send back. On others, there is curious split-second audio drop-out. Not so bad that one loses the thread of the story. The books themselves are fun. Because of a recent concussion, I can't watch television or read much, so audiobooks are saving my sanity. I just wish the quality of these recorded books were better, especially since the price is so high. All of the CDs were churned out by the same studio.Update: I've had to return THREE of these audiobooks because one of the CDs in each book was messed up - either from static or from skipping so badly that they were impossible to understand. Sad that the books that are so good are marred by bad production quality. I haven't asked for refunds, just replacement audiobooks that I could listen to. Fingers crossed.

Christmas in Junktown: the Third Novel in The Cat Who Series
Lilian Jackson Braun (1913-2011) published three mystery novels between 1966 and 1968, works that established central character James Qwilleran as divorced, a recovering alcoholic, and a newspaper reporter who finds himself unexpectedly drawn to a pair of Siamese cats—and who uses their unexpected insights to unravel the murders he encounters in his work. All three books were more about character than mystery, and they were popular bestsellers of the era. For reasons that remain unclear, Braun stopped the series at that point—and then unexpectedly revived it eighteen years later, ultimately producing 29 novels and several three related works. In my opinion, the three early novels are the best in the series; while most of her books have tremendous charm, her later books are very loosely written (several of her final books so much so that they are extremely weak) and increasingly fanciful; her first novels, however, have a tighter construction and a more forceful narrative. The third novel, THE CAT WHO TURNED ON AND OFF, was published in 1967, and presents leading character Qwill as a recovering alcoholic and now a journalist for a newspaper named The Daily Fluxion. Having successfully struggled with an arts beat and then an interior design special tabloid, he is now eager to prove himself for once and all with a series describing “Christmas in Junktown—” a rundown area of the city that has also become a thriving junk and antique shop district.Qwill finds a new apartment in the process—and a new romantic interest—but he is scarcely on the job when he learns of the questionable death of one of the district’s most noted shopkeepers—and other deaths are not far behind. But with a little help from super-smart Siamese cat Koko and the delicious Yum Yum, Qwill may not only be able to expose the killer, but save the district from the wrecking ball. The book introduces Iris Cobb, who will figure in later novels. Braun will never compete with the likes of Agatha Christie, but her characters, situations, and settings are long on charm, and her novels make for enjoyable flyweight reading. Third book in the Wonderful Cat Who Series
This book is the third book about Qwilleran and his siamese cats. In this book Qwilleran is assigned to write about antiques and starts interviewing people who sell secondhand antiques in a rundown part of the city called Junktown. While doing the assignment he also solves two murders committed by a heroin dealer hiding in plain sight by pretending to be an antiques dealer

pleasant read
This is the third novel in the series and like the first two was written in the late 1960's and so is a bit dated in some areas but not too terribly. The writing is smooth and well paced but not especially thrilling. Qwill the main character is a journalist for the local newspaper trying to get back on his feet after being a big time crime reporter with a drinking problem. To be honest his past sounds a lot more interesting than his present or future. The two cats in the series don't really add much in the way investigative techniques and are used mainly as a way to introduce clues into the plot. They are amusing but not really essential to the story lines. The main plot device so far is that Qwill needs a place to live and when he moves in he stumbles over a crime and because of his background he pursues it. Really fairly standard whodunit plotting. While not especially creative or innovative and with little actual violence or romance the novels are still pleasant to read and would be ideal for a trip or the beach.

Cat who rides again
I had all the books as physical books. I am now in the process of getting them all electronically. I think it is fantastic I can now take them on holiday and not be weighed down with print and pap er. So sad Lillian Jackson Braun is dead so this wonderful series is no longer added to with new books.
